Sony is allegedly taking revenge for live service flops on Bungie, but an insider says the death of Destiny 2 has another reason.
What are these rumors? French journalist Sylvain Trinel (BFM) reports on X that he spoke with his sources at PlayStation about Bungie and Destiny 2. He says many people at PlayStation do not understand the decision not to continue Destiny 2.
Trinel goes on to say that some of his contacts mentioned there is a kind of “desire for revenge” because Sony sees Bungie as being to blame for the failure of the “Games as a Service” strategy.
Why should Bungie be blamed for the failure of the strategy? Even during the acquisition of Bungie by Sony in 2022, it was said that Sony was primarily buying the company for its expertise in service games. The acquisition was an important part of the strategy to expand the reach of PlayStation. Bungie was supposed to be kind of an internal advisor for Sony studios.
However, Sony’s strategy did not work out. Concord was a multi-million flop, games like The Last of Us Online or a God of War multiplayer were in development but never released. And then Bungie’s own Marathon also fell below expectations.
Insider steps in, says: The death of Destiny has another reason
Who is the insider? In a post on X, Destiny expert and Bungie insider Paul Tassi has also commented on Sony’s revenge rumors. Tassi is an American journalist writing for the English-language magazine “Forbes.” He is closely connected with certain employees of Bungie, claims to have some friends at the studio, and is also very familiar with Destiny.
This is what the insider says: Tassi spoke with his sources at Bungie about the revenge rumors. Those sources have the impression that these rumors come from employees who are just observing and not from anyone high up with significant knowledge about the mindset of the leadership.
Furthermore, he states that the death of Destiny 2, according to his sources at Bungie, is almost entirely financial in nature. Destiny 2 simply cost more than it brought in. Nobody at Bungie believes that a “revenge idea” from Sony exists.

This is how it should continue: In conclusion, Tassi states that according to his sources, there are no plans to shut down the servers of Destiny 2.
In another post on X, Tassi also spoke about possible layoffs that Bungie might implement. While he does not want to give a percentage, he estimates it will be significant, as the studio has no approved new game and will hardly put 400 additional developers on Marathon.
Regarding the upcoming wave of layoffs, the aforementioned French journalist Sylvain Trinel mentioned around 50% of the studio. You can read our article on the news here on MeinMMO: Despite free week, Marathon crashes – Insider says: Bungie is facing the next catastrophe
