In Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War you can play together in crossplay with PC, PS4, and Xbox One again. The next-gen consoles PS5 and Xbox Series X and S also enable crossplay. MeinMMO shows you how to do it.
What is crossplay? This allows you to play the new CoD Cold War with friends on any platform. As a PC player, you can play together with friends who are on Xbox or PlayStation.
Crossplay is available for almost all multiplayer modes and there are no restrictions except for the PlayStation-exclusive zombie mode “Firestorm”.

How can you activate crossplay? Crossplay is usually already activated. However, you can also deactivate it in the settings or activate it again there. Here’s how:
- Go to the gear icon in the main menu and open the settings – this is also possible in each individual mode
- Click on the “Account & Network” field
- In the “Activision account” section, you can activate or deactivate crossplay in the 2nd position
Crossplay applies to every mode by the way. If you deactivate crossplay, the player search may take longer, as only lobbies that actually only include players on your console or PC will be searched.
How to play with friends: For this, you and your friends need to have an account with Activision (via callofduty.com). Once that’s in place, you can invite your friends. Follow these steps:
- Click on “Social” in the upper right corner of the screen. You can do this in any mode
- There you can choose the option “Add Activision friends”
- Have your teammates give you their Activision ID. To find it, look at the bottom of the screen. With a button press, you can display “My Activision ID”
- Then you can send the friend request, and your friend will receive this request in his CoD social menu
- Once connected, you can join and invite each other
What about cross-gen? The new consoles PS5 and Xbox Series X and S also support crossplay. So you can play normally with friends on other consoles with these consoles.
Can I deactivate crossplay and still play with next-gen / last-gen? Yes, for example, if you turn off crossplay on a PS4, you can still play with your buddies on the PS5. Only PC and Xbox players are excluded from your matches.
What about the PS bonuses? PlayStation players receive special bonuses in Cold War again. These remain exclusive to these players. Despite crossplay, you cannot transfer these bonuses.
What advantages does crossplay bring? With crossplay, you can benefit from some advantages. These include:
- The player search is shorter because you are matched with players on all platforms
- You can save your progress on one console with cross-save and then continue playing on another platform with that progress
How exactly does cross-save work? We explain this with the example of the PlayStation 4. You have already been playing Cold War diligently and have made some progress. Now you are one of the lucky ones who received the new console at the release of the PS5. You can then continue playing Cold War on the PS5 with your progress, even though you earned it on the PS4.
