The Japanese animation studio Pierrot is primarily known for animes like Naruto, Bleach, or Tokyo Ghoul. After nearly 30 years, they are now venturing into a new genre.
What kind of anime will it be? The anime is titled “Mahō no Shimai: Lulutto Lilly,” which translates to “Magical Sisters Lulutto Lilly” in English. The story revolves around the siblings Fuu and Rui, who are still in elementary and middle school.
Just before the summer holidays, Fuu encounters a magical spaceship with beings from another star. Through them, Fuu gains magical powers. Almost simultaneously, her sister Rui obtains the same abilities.
However, these powers are tied to two rules:
- The magical time limit is exactly one year.
- The existence of magic must be kept secret from all other people.
Since the two sisters received their powers independently, they are unaware that the other possesses magic. Therefore, they must keep their existence as Magical Girls a secret from each other.
With their magical powers, the two sisters can transform into adult women and start a career as idols.
On the surface, the entire premise sounds completely harmless and not at all like the usual type of the animation studio, which is known for more action-packed series. But there is a reason for that.
Animation studio was tired of fights
Why isn’t it an action anime? In an interview with Oricon, Studio Pierrot’s producer Yohei Fukui spoke about the anime. He addressed the question of why there are no fights, as seen in other Magical Girl series:
The producer in charge this time complained: “I’m tired of the battle scenes…” (laughs). In this age of information overload, which quickly exhausts us, we saw the need for an anime with a gentle and calming worldview – something that can be enjoyed at one’s own pace while still being captivated, rather than having to stare intently at the screen.
Nonetheless, the anime is supposed to have a certain seriousness. The girls are meant to learn that magic cannot solve everything and that one must still work hard for their dreams to come true.
Where is the anime airing? The series started on April 5, 2026, and is currently airing every Sunday on Japanese television. A release date for Germany has not yet been announced.
