The beta of Modern Warfare 4 will introduce a new matchmaking system and learns from COD classics that are currently enjoying a renaissance.
What is the inspiration? Activision announced on the official Call of Duty account via X that they will be introducing a new matchmaking system.
They have learned a lot about multiplayer matchmaking from player data and feedback “over the past year”. Therefore, they are introducing a matchmaking system with Season 5 in Black Ops 7 and in the upcoming beta of Modern Warfare that is inspired by the COD classics Black Ops and Black Ops 2.
The matchmaking thus returns more strongly to its origins, to a time before Modern Warfare 2019, when skill-based matchmaking (SBMM) was still significantly weaker.
What is the difference from the previous matchmaking? With Black Ops 7, Call of Duty introduced the so-called “Open Playlist”, in which SBMM is significantly weakened. In a comment on X, the developers addressed how the new system differs from the Open Playlist.
Accordingly, the new system builds on what the developers have learned, featuring “smarter team balancing, a wide variety of matches, improvements that help keep matches full, and a better experience for parties with mixed levels.” Activision has not yet shared more precise information.
Open playlists will also continue to be available in BO7 and the MW4 beta. They will use player feedback and match data to refine the system.
What is the problem with SBMM? SBMM stands for skill-based matchmaking and describes a system that selects your teammates and opponents based on your skill and performance. The better you play, the stronger your opponents will be.
The SBMM has been criticized by a part of the community for years. They say that the system prevents them from playing relaxed rounds and that they have to give their best in every match. This takes away the joy of playing.
Even MeinMMO editor Dariusz is not a fan of skill-based matchmaking and believes that both equally skilled and less skilled players suffer under the system and it even tears apart friend groups: Almost all modern shooters have a problem – and it not only takes away the fun, it also harms friendships
