Max PhunkRoyal
is one of the most well-known German figures on Twitch. But his beginnings as a content creator were quite something. He had such an embarrassing situation on Twitch that ultimately shook him awake.
Who is it about? Max, known as PhunkRoyal, is an indispensable part of the German YouTube and Twitch scene. He belongs – like Erik Gronkh
Range – to the pioneers of the German content creator scene, as he has been uploading Let’s Plays on his YouTube channel since 2009.
Since 2011, he has been active on Twitch and now streams there for an average of 2,848 viewers (in the last 365 days according to SullyGnome.com). However, his early days on Twitch were anything but easy, as he recounts in the latest episode of the podcast Henke’s Corner on YouTube.

More luck than sense
What was that stream like? When PhunkRoyal was in his mid-20s, he was going through a tough time in his life. Although he had completed an acting education, he then joined the Bundeswehr. After that, he took a break from the Bundeswehr, which he, by his own admission, spent at home. During this time and afterwards, he apparently ignored the job center and eventually accrued 49,000 euros in debt.
Eventually, PhunkRoyal lost his apartment and had to move back in with his mother, as he says. From there, he continued to stream on Twitch, at that time, according to his own statement, to about 500 to 600 viewers. During these streams, PhunkRoyal regularly consumed alcohol to be more relaxed
on stream. The Twitch streamer now refers to himself at that time as an alcoholic.

In one of his Twitch streams, PhunkRoyal got so drunk that he forgot to turn off his stream. This led to him preparing for bed in the bathroom and climbing into his loft bed naked in front of the camera. In fact, Twitch did not ban PhunkRoyal for this, he says, and the stream viewers also did not share any clips of the incident.
That was more luck than sense and I was so embarrassed, I was so ashamed of how I acted and what happened. That shook me awake. I would say since then, a lot has changed for me in many respects, because the state I was in back then, both with alcohol and my attitude towards the stream, towards myself, and the life I led, has changed quite a bit.

After that, PhunkRoyal, as he says, went into therapy, turned his life around through much reflection, and became increasingly successful on Twitch. In principle, this stream was probably the trigger for PhunkRoyal to get on the path to recovery.
