Battlefield 6 finally justifies the €70 price tag after 4 seasons and numerous patches, but the biggest release sin still plagues the game

Battlefield 6 Dariusz skeptisch

Nine months after release, it is finally worth restarting Battlefield 6. The shooter now has almost the scope of a proper 1.0 release.

The 10th of October 2025 – it has been a full nine months since Battlefield 6 was released. After an extremely strong launch with over 656,000 concurrent players on Steam alone and over 7 million copies sold in the release week, disillusionment set in quickly – even among fans like me who praised the shooter highly.

At the end of October and beginning of November, there were too many problems at once:

  • Some maps were unplayable due to bugs or exploits (using the recon drone to occupy unreachable roofs; helicopters not spawning for one team; etc.).
  • Vehicles felt far too weak, especially since a bug caused laser-guided rockets to ignore countermeasures and ALWAYS hit their target.
  • The map selection was smaller than in previous titles, with only 8 major maps (+ Saints Quarter).
  • There was a lot of criticism regarding the size of the release maps: they were relatively small and played out hurriedly. In battles lasting an average of 40 minutes, this becomes tiring.
  • The popular Little Bird and any form of naval battles were completely absent.
  • The weapon selection was solid but not up to BF4 standards.
  • The progression system with challenges to unlock new weapons and gadgets was poorly balanced; some challenges were set too high.
  • Additionally, there were gameplay issues: excessive weapon bloom, hit registration problems, severe movement exploits.

Meanwhile, we have reached Season 4, and EA has addressed many of the problems Battlefield 6 had at release. The shooter has almost reached the point of being worth the €70 price tag, but one criticism remains.

Finally, there is the content that was missing at release

Looking back at Season 4, remembering the problems that plagued Battlefield 6 shortly after release, we can say: we now have a game worth revisiting. Many of the bugs, exploits, and other issues have been fixed. Especially the weapon bloom and hit registration are now much better.

Vehicles play a more significant role than at release. I’m more of an infantry player and rarely use tanks, helicopters, or jets, so I can’t assess whether they are generally stronger than before. However, I’ve noticed that the introduction of the Little Birds has significantly helped balancing.

Thanks to the Little Birds, there are now more aircraft taking on different roles. For instance, the attack helicopter benefits from the Little Bird as engineers with rocket launchers, anti-air, and enemy pilots have more targets. Accordingly, I had several rounds where transport or attack helicopters did important work and didn’t go up in flames after just a few seconds.

A key role is also played by the map selection. We have now received some larger maps. Starting with Eastwood, later especially Contaminated, Golmud Railway, and the new Tsuru Reef are great additions. All of these maps allow vehicles to shine. At the same time, these maps are less hectic due to their size and offer the opportunity to take a breather and regroup while rotating between flags before diving into the next fight.

Tsuru Reef also brought naval warfare. This was clearly missing in Battlefield 6 and should have been included at release or at least with Season 1. Season 4 is far too late for the introduction of naval battles, but it is still an important step the game has taken. With Wake Island and the new 2-seater jets that will be added during the season, there will be another leap in quality.

And Hagental Base is a fantastic map in the spirit of Metro and Locker and much better than Empire State – so infantry players are also well catered for.

Battlefield 6 is almost at the goal, but it hasn’t arrived yet

My conclusion on the current state of Battlefield 6: It is worth taking a look again. Nine months after release, the game is almost worth the €70 it cost. However, I explicitly criticize the state of the game at release, which turned out to be significantly worse in the live game than what was foreseeable in the preview version. Many bugs and exploits were only discovered after release, and then it took too long for them to be fixed.

Additionally, I correct my own review of Battlefield 6 and admit: The community was right. The larger maps and the Little Bird were missing from the game. While I enjoy the small maps and fast-paced gameplay, variety is essential so that the game doesn’t become too tiring too quickly when we’re zipping through multiple conquest matches under constant fire from action to action. I was convinced that the smaller maps wouldn’t bother me, but ultimately it was the map selection and the exploits that led to me hardly playing Battlefield 6 for months.

Moreover, the Portal mode, as already seen in Battlefield 2042, is a complete disappointment, and here we get to the release sin that still plagues Battlefield 6: the missing server browser.

Portal is useless and is (rightly) completely ignored. The fact that EA also decided on open weapons as the primary game mode and not only excluded closed weapons from personalized matchmaking but completely kicked them out ruins my enjoyment of the game entirely. Open weapons have no place in Battlefield for me.

At least give me the server browser so I can find a server with like-minded players who prefer the original Battlefield gameplay and have corresponding settings and rules on their server. Then I also have no problem that only open weapons are available through the normal matchmaking – after all, I don’t want to take anything away from players who prefer that.
