Memory is too expensive for you? A YouTuber has made some himself. The effort is enormous, but he is very satisfied with the first result. However, the finished chips are still not enough for a gaming PC.
Since memory and SSDs are currently very expensive, the YouTuber “Dr.Semiconductor” wondered if he could not also produce RAM himself. Because there are currently no real alternatives for cheap memory.
In the first step, he turned his garden shed into a clean room. A clean room is needed for the manufacture of semiconductors, as the normal particles in the ambient air would disturb the sensitive circuits.

In his current YouTube video, “Dr.Semiconductor” shows how he manufactures a DRAM chip. These are the chips that will later be mounted on a circuit board so that they can be installed in your PC.
First, silicon pieces are prepared and cleaned. Then a thin layer of oxide is applied and a pattern is created on it using light and chemicals.
After that, the important parts of the transistors are created through etching, doping, and heating. Finally, the chip is coated with metal (aluminum), shaped, and tested.
What is the problem? At the current time, the cells are still so small that the YouTuber cannot use them in a proper PC. He himself explains that he plans to manufacture a significantly larger version and that this will then be ready to be “connected to a PC”.
So there is still one more step before the finished memory module that you can then plug into your gaming PC.
Other users also become inventive when it comes to saving a few euros when buying memory: Someone has now built their own RAM and saved quite a bit of money.
