Black Fog is in the manga a giant ancient Gengar that has been causing chaos in Kanto for centuries. The monster drained Gym Leader Sabrina of all the life force of her Pokémon when she was still a little girl, killing them in the process. Since then, she has harbored a deep hatred for the monster.
Sabrina encounters Black Fog but is defeated as Gengar absorbs her soul. Ash and Brock decide to confront the Pokémon in the Lavandia Tower and finally destroy the beast. They have a giant Poké Ball made to capture the gigantic Pokémon.
Unfortunately, Black Fog manages to break free from the Poké Ball with the move Explosion. Ash tries one last time with a Ultra Ball to capture it for good. But Black Fog is too proud to be caught and decides it would rather die than submit to a human. Therefore, it uses its last bit of life energy to unleash a final explosion.
However, there is something good that comes of it: Through its self-destruction, Sabrina gets her soul back and wakes up from the coma.
