Why is this an alternative to Destiny? While Borderlands takes a stylistic and narrative approach that is quite different from Destiny, it shares the most similarities among all the mentioned alternatives – especially Borderlands 4.
The entire Borderlands franchise is known for its loot-shooter gameplay at the highest level. No matter which game in the series you play: there are countless weapons (some with absurd abilities), various classes with unique skills, and infinite build possibilities, huge damage numbers, and a lot of grind.
It doesn’t matter whether you farm a specific weapon in search of a God Roll, grind certain activities for fun, or test a new build in the toughest battles: if you want, you can easily accumulate hundreds of hours in the individual games.
In Borderlands 4, Gearbox has taken significant inspiration from Destiny. There is now much more agile movement including dashes, slides, and the ability to hover briefly in the air. Additionally, for the first time, the series has been given a real open world that you can zip through with a hoverbike – similar to the Sparrow from Destiny, which can be spawned at any time.
What you need to know about Borderlands 4: While Borderlands fulfills many needs that Destiny fans have, the endgame remains controversial. Many players find it too thin and repetitive and believe it cannot keep the community engaged as long as they wish. Raids or dungeons at the level of Destiny do not exist.
Moreover, the game’s performance is a major point of criticism. While it has improved since the release in September 2025, it is still not good. Some players still report stuttering and FPS drops in hectic battles.
