A good group in World of Warcraft needs a tank, a healer, and 3 damage dealers. Or maybe not, because that’s what only weaklings think.
Mythic+ in World of Warcraft is among the toughest content that the MMORPG from Blizzard has to offer. It requires a lot of coordination, a good understanding of both your own class and all enemies in the dungeon, and of course a balanced group. Typically, this consists of one tank, one healer, and three DPS characters to ensure solid progress within the time limit.
A Chinese group has now shown: No, actually tanks are enough. Because they can tackle even the toughest challenges alone.
What did the group do? The Chinese group of 5 guardian druids has completed a mythic keystone dungeon within the time limit. We’re not talking about a “M+2” or “M+10” – but dizzying “M+20”. This is among the highest currently played by professionals.
Completing a dungeon at the ‘Mythic+20’ level is already quite an achievement on its own. Because a single mistake can ruin the attempt – second chances are rare, as then the timer cannot be managed anymore. After all, every death is penalized with penal seconds, and a complete wipe can negate minutes of work.
How was that possible? Guardian druids have a quite high damage output, allowing them to deal massive damage that can compete with many pure DPS specializations. That was the only way to keep within the timer and complete the dungeon within the time limit.
Blizzard pulls the emergency brake, nerfs druids hard
As a consequence, Blizzard announced nerfs just a few hours later (WoW Forum) that affect guardian druids. These are “last minute” changes, as the hotfix goes live in the USA already today (May 12, 2026) and in Europe tomorrow (May 13, 2026). The ability “Jack” will deal 25% less damage, and the self-healing from “Elune’s Favor” will be reduced by 40%.
This should at least prevent this group composition from achieving such massive successes in the future.
Cortyn says: I still find it quite strange that tanks have such a high damage output. I understand why this is necessary: It makes the tank role more attractive and ensures that more people play tank when they can deal as much damage as many DPS characters. However, this also leads to exactly such absurd situations where tanks simply think: Well, why is the rest of the Holy Trinity even needed? Finding a good middle ground here is difficult. But at least Blizzard reacted almost immediately and announced nerfs.
How do you find the current class balance in World of Warcraft? Do you think it’s good that tanks are essentially true all-round talents that excel in damage and self-healing? Or should that not be the case, even if there are then fewer tanks?
That tanks occasionally forego other specializations comes back every few months – that was also the case at the end of The War Within.
