What is Re:Zero about? One day while shopping, Subaru suddenly finds himself in a fantasy world – something he knows from the anime he loves to watch. He quickly comes to terms and meets a pretty young woman named Emilia, believing he is living his personal dream. At least until Emilia is killed before his eyes and he dies as well. But Subaru lives on – time seems to have been turned back for him.
Subaru dies repeatedly on his journey, while his psyche breaks a little more with each death and each new realization.
Why do people still think about Re:Zero long after? The first season of Re:Zero was for me the isekai that broke out of the typical everyday life of these stories. There was no overpowering hero, no one-dimensional world, but multi-faceted characters with complex backstories and a unique premise where suffering is preordained.
The creators of the series knew exactly what they were doing. They understood how impactful some episodes would be. That’s why, during the original broadcast in Japan, they even bought the commercial block (i.e., the ad break during an episode) to let the series unfold its full effect.
Especially episode 15 “The Outside of Madness” will remain in my memory as a milestone of anime art. It is the darkest and most emotional episode ever and the creators knew that they had created “Peak Cinema” when they played the credits in the middle of the season. The scenery, the soundtrack, the entire atmosphere – I often think back to this episode and also enjoy watching reactions to it, to see the same suffering on the faces of others.
