Final Fantasy XIV is the big MMO that most people will likely know. However, years earlier, another game in the series was released that is still running today and will soon celebrate a major anniversary – including further updates.
Which game is it? Final Fantasy XI was released in 2002 in Japan and two years later in Europe. It is an MMORPG, quite similar to the currently popular Final Fantasy XIV.
With now 24 years, the game belongs to the older MMOs that are still online. However, that does not prevent the developers at Square Enix from continuing to maintain the title. Besides a fresh website, the game itself is also set to be pushed a bit more towards modernity.

A true milestone
What are the developers announcing? Just in time for the 24th birthday of Final Fantasy XI, the devs around producer and director Yoji Fujito use the opportunity in the official blog post to first thank the fans for their long-standing loyalty.
At the same time, they want to “expand the foundation of the game for both the present and the future.” In other words: Existing features will be enhanced and improved.
In celebration of the anniversary, the developers also released an anime video created in collaboration with the animator Waboku:
Among the specific new features that fans can expect in the near future are:
- Progress for players from item level 119 will be simplified, and access to challenging content will be made easier
- Expanded equipment and character system
- High-level mission battlefields
- New notorious monsters
- Story missions will be repeatable in the future
- New events and campaigns
- Free Trial now has no time limit, the level cap is at 75
In the end, Yoji Fujito thanks the community once again, as well as the team that has kept Final Fantasy XI alive until today. The success of the game is the reason that there will still be updates in the future. At least until the 30th anniversary in 2032.
