During this year’s Fan Festival for Final Fantasy XIV in the USA, the next expansion of the MMORPG, “Evercold,” was announced. And it has caused a true high for MeinMMO editor Alex, as from his perspective, this could be the necessary step in the right direction.
With mixed feelings, I turned on the livestream for the opening of the Fan Fest in Anaheim to follow the upcoming announcement of the latest expansion of Final Fantasy XIV. After all, the last addon Dawntrail has been rather disappointing for many players and I too had gradually settled into a state of saturation and fatigue, so I had to make the game itself more exciting.
A new expansion could build on that or cleverly use the reboot to stop the declining player numbers and reignite the love for one of the most popular MMORPGs.
I was all the more relieved when the time finally came, and Evercold was announced with an initial insight. I immediately recalled a time when my heart shone brightest for my favorite MMO. And I am sure: If Evercold actually delivers what two of the best expansions have achieved so far, it could significantly turn the tide for the MMORPG.
The new expansion Evercold is scheduled for release in January 2027 and is set to shake things up in the MMORPG with its innovations.
Check out the trailer yourself; maybe you’ll feel what I mean:
Many parallels to the best expansions of Final Fantasy XIV
If you ask the Final Fantasy community which expansions they liked the most, the names Shadowbringers and Endwalker inevitably come up time and again. And this is also reflected in the player counts, which peaked during Shadowbringers and Endwalker.
Looking at the trailer for Evercold, the first tones of the music evoke pleasant memories of that time. Because the title song of the Shadowbringers expansion started very similarly. I immediately got goosebumps. The colors also remind me in the first seconds of the expansion.
Then it becomes clear: In Evercold, our Warrior of Light is once again drawn into a shard world, just like in Shadowbringers, and our Ascian alter ego Azem, who played a crucial role in Endwalker, will once again be important.
The moon is also seen more frequently, which had a very special role in the Endwalker expansion. The end of the trailer also shows Warriors of Light “Meteor” as a Reaper, a class introduced with Endwalker.

And even beyond the trailer, the announcement and the presentation of some innovations and changes revealed various striking parallels – especially with regard to Shadowbringers:
- Plays in the fourth shard world
- Shadowbringers also took place in a shard world
- The land is covered in seemingly uncontrollable ice
- In Shadowbringers, the influx of light spread across the world
- There will be a new defender and a physical ranged DPS
- In Shadowbringers, the Gunbreaker (Tank) and Dancer (physical ranged DPS) were added back then
- There will be an alliance raid series in collaboration with a popular franchise: Evangelion
- In Shadowbringers, there was one of the most popular alliance raid series with the NieR collaboration
And these are just some of the parallels that can be mentioned here and that particularly stuck with me. Now one might naturally say: “But isn’t that just the same old thing? How is that supposed to save the MMORPG and attract players?”
The question is valid, but from my perspective, precisely these parallels could lure veterans back. They testify to a step back to the beloved times of the MMO, where the individual character was the focus and epic storytelling was a hallmark of FFXIV.
Here you can watch the teaser for the collaboration with Evangelion:
Deeper focus on the individual character and new experiments
And the innovations could also attract many new and old players. For here, the developers prove that they know what their community likes, and that they are also ready to explore fresh paths.
Many changes that are to come with Evercold will bring the individual character back into focus – as that is what grounds us in the MMORPG and creates our identity within it. There will be new options to customize the appearance of our character in more detail, such as through color sliders instead of pre-made palettes or the ability to layer makeup.
Additionally, there will be experiments with the combat system (especially exciting for veterans, but also for newcomers). Under the name “Evolution,” there will be alternative abilities for all classes that are more tailored to the individual character of each job. This aims to break up the somewhat homogenized structure of the last expansions that has been criticized by many veterans.
Furthermore, new patches are to come more frequently, and the droughts between them will be smaller, ensuring that players are provided with new content even between major updates.
All in all, I was very happy with the announcement of Evercold and I’m sure: If all of this is implemented as well as it currently seems, the Final Fantasy XIV expansion could shine anew, reflecting in the sparkling ice.
Evercold is set to release in January 2027, and new information will be available at the Fan Fests in Berlin (July 25 & 26, 2026) and Tokyo (October 31 & November 1, 2026). Until then, Patch 7.5 will be released and gradually herald the story of the upcoming expansion.
