Fans remember a player from World of Warcraft even after 20 years. Booms has terrorized an entire realm.
In World of Warcraft, there are a handful of players who have become legends over the years. Whether it’s in the modern game Rextroy with his many curious and elaborate exploits or the heart-wrenching story of Ibelin, which is detailed in a Netflix documentary.
But even during Vanilla times, there was a player who amusingly terrorized an entire realm: Booms and his alt character Boomsbot.
Booms blocked ships – with mind control
What did Booms do? On the realm Stonemaul (a US server), the Alliance character Boomsbot stood at the harbor of Menethil. He watched over the ships departing from Menethil either to the Darkshore or to the Swamp of Sorrows.
When Alliance players wanted to board a ship, Boomsbot would inform them that they needed to pay a toll – essentially a small fee for using the ship. However, since Boomsbot himself was a low-level character – and mainly an Alliance character – most players initially did not feel intimidated.
That was about to change, as those who refused to pay the toll soon encountered Booms, the undead Horde priest who stood nearby. As soon as the ship was about to leave, Booms targeted the toll refusers with mind control and made them jump overboard slowly.
In the Vanilla version, with no flying mounts, it was impossible to catch up to the ship. Those who disembarked had to wait several minutes for the next ship.
Those who were caught by Booms once or twice reluctantly paid the demanded fee later or waited for other players to have time to deal with Booms together. However, he would reappear after just a few hours. A method that supposedly earned him a lot of gold.

What happened to Booms? Booms became a legend among players who also became known on other realms and spawned several imitators. However, after the player passed away relatively early, Blizzard – as they often do – added a memorial to this character in the game.
In the Krasarang Wilds of Mists of Pandaria, you can meet the NPC named Booms. He is the captain of a ship all the way at the south of the map. But watch out: he still possesses his extremely annoying mind control ability, which he uses regularly.
