The developers of Helldivers 2 want to get to the bottom of a certain group of cheaters, but there is criticism from the fair players.
What kind of initiative is this from Helldivers 2? The developers of Helldivers 2 announced in a post on the official Discord server of the game that they want to implement changes to punish players who cheat for Over Credits.
Over Credits are the (blue) currency in Helldivers 2 that you can use to acquire new War Bonds, among other things. War Bonds are the Battle Passes with which Helldivers 2 regularly introduces new weapons, armor, and more. Over Credits can be earned or purchased for real money.
Arrowhead received feedback from players that it feels unfair when someone cheats for Over Credits while fair players earn their currency with great effort – but after the announcement of new measures, the player feedback reads quite differently.
What exactly are these measures? The developers are introducing monitoring methods to detect suspicious Over Credit activities. The system should now recognize when Over Credits are being earned at an unrealistically high rate.
The aim of the measures is “cheaters, botters, and people who use automation and duplication exploits to accumulate Over Credits at rates that no human Helldiver could ever achieve legitimately.” They mention a rate that is significantly higher than the highest earnings ever recorded from fair players. Additionally, there are now measures to counter cheating – “to stop it directly at the source before it can harm the economy in which you play,” it says in the announcement.
Arrowhead emphasizes that legitimate players are not affected by the new measures. But a part of the community already has doubts.
What does the community say about the announcement? On Reddit, the announcement from Helldivers 2 is discussed harshly. Many players criticize especially the reasoning, as it seems not entirely honest to them.
As stated in the announcement, they want to stop cheaters before they “harm the economy” in which the players play. However, Helldivers 2 does not have a player-driven economy. One cannot trade with Over Credits. A player has the credits in their account and spends them, or they do not have them. It does not concern anyone but themselves and Sony or Arrowhead, some users complain. They object to the developers “pretending” that it affects non-cheaters, although it does not.
The bigger problem for some players is that the measure now is to punish Over Credit cheaters instead of recognizing that the legitimate farming methods for the currency are poor and should be improved. After all, that is why people start to collect credits unfairly.
Moreover, many players fear that the system could also flag and potentially punish fair players. For instance, if a random teammate turns out to be a cheater and spawns a lot of Over Credits for the entire lobby. One user expresses it clearly:
- “I think this is a huge problem. If a cheater joins my squad, gives me, idk, 10K Over Credits and I then get banned for something I had no influence over, I would be really pissed off.”
