Mortars are important for victory in Wardogs, but they have a big weakness: other mortars and artillery. However, there is a way to protect yourselves from them.
Why should you protect your mortars? Mortars are currently very strong and extremely important for your team’s success in Wardogs. For example, you can destroy FOB cores and drill towers with them, which your opponents use to summon the hotzone.
Additionally, you can blow up anti-air positions like SAM sites and C-RAMs with mortars, giving your helicopters more freedom in the airspace to deliver troops or supplies – or you can simply kill the enemy builder who is swinging the hammer in the enemy base or the camping sniper.
However, mortars have the significant weakness of being vulnerable to attacks from above. Enemy mortars, artillery, or even helicopters are always a threat and can damage, destroy the mortar position, or send the mortaring player to their doom.
A roof for your mortared mortars
How do you protect your mortars? You can protect your mortars in Wardogs by building them in a covered observation tower. To do this, you need to destroy some of the Hesco blocks of the tower as well as the ground of the upper floor so that the mortar position can be placed inside the tower.
With the roof of the tower, the mortar is then protected from attacks like enemy mortar and artillery strikes, as they must first destroy the roof before they can hit the mortar and its gunner.
Does that have any drawbacks? Yes! The placement in the tower restricts the 360° handling of the mortar. While you can still fire the mortar, you cannot do so in all directions. Keep this in mind when building the tower as well as when destroying the walls. If you orient the tower and thus the mortar in the wrong direction – for example, facing out of the control zone – it becomes practically useless.
The good thing is: You can easily place new Hesco blocks if you have destroyed the wrong ones, and then dismantle the right ones afterward. If you want to cover multiple directions, you can of course construct multiple such covered mortar positions.
