What do you need for a covered mortar? Basically, you only need a large hammer and building materials. For completeness, we will also list the individual components that you will build:
- 1x FOB to place the mortar
- possibly a backpack that is large enough to transport and place the FOB core
- 1x large hammer to build the mortar and the observation tower
- At least 152 building materials
- at least 1x mortar (large hammer page 3, requires 91 building materials)
- at least 1x observation tower (large hammer page 2, requires 61 building materials)
- possibly Hesco blocks and T-walls (requires 14/10 building materials per wall)
- Sufficient money and support level to own the large hammer
How to build a covered mortar:
Step 1: Build an observation tower.
To do this, take out your large hammer, switch to page 2 of the selection wheel and place the tower.
Step 2: Place the tower with the correct side facing the firing direction
When placing the tower, make sure to align it with the future opening in the direction you want to mortar. Use the ladder of the tower as a reference, as you will NOT destroy any Hesco blocks on this side. Align the tower so that the opposite side of the ladder and one of the adjoining long sides with the passage face the firing direction.
Step 3: Dismantle Hesco blocks
Go to the observation tower and remove the Hesco blocks on the side of the tower from which you want to shoot out. Equip the hammer again for the dismantling of the blocks and press the corresponding key. In the default key mapping, this is the “V” key on the keyboard.
You need to remove a total of 4 Hesco blocks.
Step 4: Destroy the ceiling
Dismantle the ceiling of the tower, the level where you would stand when entering the tower via the ladder and taking the spot of the observer. This allows the mortar to be ready to fire, as otherwise your grenades would hit the ceiling.
Do not destroy the proper roof of the tower at the top!
Step 5: Place the mortar
After you have removed enough Hesco blocks, place the mortar on the floor of the tower.
Step 6: Close gaps (optional)
Since the observation tower on the ground floor actually has two passages, there remains a gap in the Hesco blocks on the back. Here, place a new Hesco block or a door to close the gap.
Step 7: Strengthen defense against enemy mortars (optional)
To additionally protect your mortar from enemy attacks, you can place additional Hesco blocks and T-walls on the roof of your observation tower. Incoming mortar shells will first have to blast through the additional blocks and walls before they can cause damage to the roof of the tower and destroy it.
MeinMMO recommendation: For the roof reinforcement, use a mix of simple Hesco blocks and T-walls. On the four already placed individual Hesco blocks on the roof, you can stack T-walls. Around it, place T-walls without Hesco blocks underneath. The finished structure could finally look like this:
Of course, the mortar position in this form is not protected against enemy infantry. For that, you will need to build a base with outer walls, gates, etc., even if it doesn’t have to be extraordinarily large. The covered mortar position serves only as a small part of a complete base.
