At CAGGTUS 2024, our colleagues from GameStar Talk, together with Maurice Weber, MeinMMO editor-in-chief Leya Jankowski, and the managing director of FusionPlay discussed the current state of service games.
What is GameStar Talk? On the YouTube channel GameStar Talk, you have been able to see the GameStar Podcast in video format since 2023. This is a joint offering from GameStar, GamePro, and MeinMMO and aims to entertain you with videos and discussions while also providing something new: perspectives, insights, and knowledge about games, their developers, and their players.
Additionally, you will get to see new sides of our team members and colleagues in this offering.
What is being discussed? In the live recording from CAGGTUS 2024, Paul Aelis, Maurice Weber, and our editor-in-chief Leya Jankowski speak with Konrad Kunze, the managing director of FusionPlay, about the current state of service games.
They address the question of whether service games still have a chance today and what the industry can learn from dramas like Suicide Squad, Anthem, and Fallout 76. Particularly in the AAA sector, service games seem to be in crisis right now. Whether they are on the brink of extinction or not is what the four discuss in their conversation.
They also talk about successful examples from recent years. Among them is Monopoly GO. This is a service game that has already made more profits in under a year than the Game of the Year title Baldur’s Gate 3.
The discussion group seeks an answer to the question of what good strategies there are for service games and why this concept is so lucrative and important for developers and publishers.
Do you think our hobby is in danger, or do you see no major problem due to the current state of service games? Feel free to discuss in the comments.
The service game Fallout 76 seems to be doing quite well at the moment, thanks to the successful series: The Fallout MMO was a flop at release – 6 years later, suddenly, as many players are playing on Steam as ever before
