Twitch can do much more as a live streaming platform than just freak-outs in gaming and drama. One streamer has raised $7.5 million for animal welfare through the platform, and her idea is brilliant.
Who is it about? Maya Higa is an American environmentalist who has created a kind of new version of visiting a zoo on Twitch, benefiting the animals in particular. On Twitch, she is just shy of the one million follower mark and recently gave a TED Talk (via YouTube) about her engagement.
Twitch for Animals
What is this concept? The success on Twitch does not come for Maya Higa through boring, preachy content about animals and how bad they have it. Instead, she deals with the everyday life of her Alveus Sanctuary, a non-profit rescue center for exotic animals and a virtual educational center.
Her viewers experience the everyday life of her rescue center up close. There is also the possibility to feed the animals through donations and comfortably watch them eating from the couch via camera. This zoo experience from the couch alone is said by Maya Higa to have generated $38,000 (approximately €32,500) – with just one feeder.
What happens with the revenues? Not only the non-profit rescue center but also projects scattered across the globe have already been supported by the streamer. The $7.5 million (approximately €6.4 million) she has earned through streaming, but also through her YouTube channel, is accordingly used for a good cause.
In her TED Talk, Maya Higa explains that with the money, she also rescues animals from captivity, who then receive a new life in the rescue center and sometimes even see daylight for the first time.
The concept of making her viewers part of the mission and turning their donations into direct results works brilliantly. Maya Higa is making the world a little better with her efforts, and that is exactly why her fans love her. On the other hand, one streamer seems to be hard to surpass: Streamer aims to raise €117,000 for children with cancer in one week – In the end, he has €60 million and a world record
