Take-Two Interactive, the publisher of GTA 5, is taking legal action against a site that is allegedly making millions from selling hacked accounts.
Which site is the publisher going after? The site in question is PlayerAuctions – a Chinese website known for trading and selling accounts and digital currencies in online games.
In a complaint filed by the publisher in the United States District Court in California, it states:
- “The website PlayerAuctions.com offers a huge online marketplace with thousands of listings for unauthorized, infringing GTA V content – including heavily modified player accounts, in-game items, and virtual currency – all obtained through hacking software, cheats, and technical exploits.”

What is the accusation? Take-Two accuses the website of operating “a highly developed sales platform” and actively recruiting “sellers” who are skilled in using hacking software and other exploits to create infringing digital goods and offer illegal “services” for players.
By receiving a portion of every transaction on their marketplace, the website generates “millions in revenue” from the content sold. Buyers are also lured in as the website offers a “buyer protection” – if one of the hacked accounts is banned, the buyer gets their money back.
PlayerAuctions would offer this “protection” because the company knows full well that the hacked player account listings on its marketplace violate Take-Two’s terms of service and are unauthorized.
The complaint further states that the website not only harms the publisher but also the players of GTA 5. The size of the website diminishes the overall player experience, and unsuspecting players are led to buy cheats themselves to keep up with the hackers.
Finally, Take-Two claims that it has already sent a multitude of cease-and-desist letters. However, all of these are said to have been ignored by PlayerAuctions. For this reason, a lawsuit is now intended to stop the “corrupt business model” of PlayerAuctions.
