In 2023, The Elder Scrolls Online breaks its old update cycle. This means that fewer dungeons will be coming to the game than usual. However, a still mysterious mechanic at the end of the year is supposed to provide relief.
What is changing in ESO? Normally, the updates in ESO have been scheduled for several years, so each player basically knows what is coming to the MMORPG in the next few months..
However, in 2023, the developers want to break this and bring some innovations to the update cycle:
- The year 2023 begins for Elder Scrolls Online with the DLC Scribes of Fate. This brings, as usual, two new dungeons in the normal and veteran mode. In addition, the new story “Shadows over Morrowind” will start, which is supposed to run throughout 2023 and maybe even beyond.
- On June 5, the big expansion Necrom comes to the MMORPG. This brings an approximately 30-hour campaign in two new areas, as well as the new class Arcanist.
- The focus in the third quarter will be on player conveniences and bug fixes.
- At the end of the year 2023, in the fourth quarter, comes perhaps the most exciting innovation: It is a kind of endless dungeons where you can compete against each other.

Endless dungeons with your “buddy”
What do we know about the endless dungeon? So far, almost nothing, and the information about it is actually quite scarce:
- We know that it is supposed to be its own game mode that will appear in the fourth quarter of 2023.
- This new mechanic fundamentally focuses on PvE and offers a challenge.
The endless dungeon is supposed to be divided into different floors, which will gradually become more difficult and challenge you further. “You” is also to be understood in the plural, as you are supposed to go through the dungeon with two people.
You will probably be able to fight through the dungeon with either another player or an NPC companion. There is talk of a “buddy” that you can take with you. It has not been precisely defined yet, but the players are actively discussing it in the forum (via elderscrollsonline.com).
Much more is not yet known about the new mechanic. It would also be conceivable to have leaderboards to compare, but that has not been confirmed yet. We at MeinMMO will keep you updated.
The new class as another highlight of 2023
What is the highlight of Necrom? In addition to the new areas and story, the highlight of the new expansion Necrom is the new class of the Arcanist. This relies on a unique mechanic in the ESO universe and is therefore supposed to bring fresh wind into the meta and class selection.
With the Arcanist, you collect so-called Crux points that influence your abilities. You can choose whether you prefer to perform an ability with one Crux and thereby deal less damage, or collect more and later unleash a more powerful ability.
Like other classes, the Arcanist also offers various skill trees to focus on damage, healing, or tanking. The new class is therefore versatile and also flexible to play due to the Crux mechanic.
