Spider-Man was supposed to get an elaborately staged movie in the 90s. None other than James Cameron was planned as the director. His version of Peter Parker was supposed to be pretty dark.
Most people are likely familiar with the Spider-Man films featuring Tom Holland, Andrew Garfield, or Tobey Maguire. The latter kicked off the great superhero era alongside director Sam Raimi in 2002.
But already in the early 90s, James Cameron was dealing with the subject. Yes, you read that right. The director of Avatar, Aliens, or Titanic wanted to bring his version of Peter Parker to the big screen.
To this end, he wrote a concept that already features elements of a screenplay. Anyone interested can read it on the website teako170.com.
The special thing about this version is that the story would have been significantly darker, making Peter Parker a swearing, internally conflicted student. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg that sparks discussions among fans.
A Dark Story from the Action Master
What did Cameron’s vision look like? Peter Parker comes from a socially disadvantaged neighborhood, he is a loner and rebellious. Unusually for later films, he appears defiant and swearing. At one point, he shouts, “I’ll kill you! You asshole! Are you listening?! You’re dead, you sick bastard!”
In Cameron’s version, there is also the famous spider bite, after which Peter falls into a fever dream full of hallucinations and excretes a sticky substance in his sleep. As Spider-Man, he then has to face the villain Carlton Strand, who can be imagined as a mix of Electro and Kingpin.
The screenplay still sparks discussions today, for example on Reddit, because it contains some elements that seem alien to Spider-Man. Among other things, there is an explicit sex scene with Mary Jane on the Brooklyn Bridge. At another point, a child dies from a fall after Spider-Man chases it due to a theft. The web-shooters were also first created organically here, which was later adopted by Sam Raimi.
Some fans enjoy the dark twist. One user emphasizes on Reddit that Cameron’s vision is closer to that from the 60s. The raw tone is realistic and offers an adult perspective on the hero.
Another user thinks on Reddit, however, that the film would have failed and harmed Spider-Man: “Cameron didn’t care whether it accurately matched the comic.”
In the end, the project failed because the production studio Carolco Pictures went bankrupt in 1996. There had already been legal disputes. The film was plagued by issues even during development.
Why would James Cameron have been perfect? The screenplay may be dark and offer a new perspective on Spider-Man. Besides, it would have been exciting to see how Cameron staged the battles and action scenes. He is considered one of the great experts in the genre and provides spectacular and convincingly staged action in all his films. Just think of Aliens or Avatar.
After all, some of Cameron’s ideas inspired his successor Sam Raimi. And he delivered three very defining films. What do you think about the story?
