Spider-Man will soon be seen in a new movie from the MCU. He seemingly has a power that is usually known from Sam Raimi’s trilogy and was invented by another director.
Usually, Spider-Man uses a mechanical device to shoot his webs. He has received abilities like the spider-sense thanks to the spider bite and can climb walls, but the shooting of the threads is technically explained.
So it is in the MCU movies as well. That will now change, because in the new trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, it seems that a power returns that is both pretty cool and somewhat gross – and was originally invented by James Cameron.
An old idea returns
What does the trailer show? In the trailer, we see Spider-Man putting on his mechanical web-shooters, after which they fire and are discarded. Below his hands, organic web material penetrates through the suit.
It is clear: the organic powers to produce webs will also exist in the MCU from now on. In the trailer, Spider-Man is visibly surprised by this. Whether the newly acquired powers are a curse or a blessing remains to be seen. There is also the question of why they are only now appearing, as this Spider-Man has already existed in the MCU for quite some time.
Based on this, speculation can arise as to whether the powers will remain the same or whether the character will further mutate and gradually transform into something he does not want to be. In the trailer, Peter Parker immediately asks Bruce Banner if he knows a way to suppress the mutations. His Hulk can finally become a monster again in the upcoming movie.
Where does the idea of organic webs come from? In Sam Raimi’s films, the abilities appear for the first time. But the idea is a bit older.
In the 90s, James Cameron attempted to bring a Spider-Man movie to theaters. The producing studio was Carolco Pictures, which, however, was closed in 1996 due to bankruptcy. Nothing came of the Cameron project. But in the concept, the idea was noted that Spider-Man could shoot organic webs.
The screenwriter David Koepp, who wrote the first Sam Raimi Spider-Man, emphasized in a conversation with IGN how influential Cameron’s concept was:
He [Cameron] had some very good ideas in it. I like the organic web shooters – some liked them, others didn’t, but that was his idea, and I was happy to implement it.
David Koepp
Furthermore, Koepp liked Cameron’s approach to taking the character Spider-Man and the superhero genre seriously. This had never been seen before. That Peter Parker would just invent mechanical web-shooters seemed unrealistic, which is why the supernatural version was preferred.
Whether Spider-Man will now live longer with the newly acquired powers in the MCU and how he learns to cope with them remains to be seen. Do you think they could even become dangerous for him? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments. The fact that Spider-Man will generally do without some of his gadgets pleases MeinMMO author Johanna greatly: Without his many gadgets, the Spider-Man from the MCU is finally interesting to me
