Ashes of Creation – The Enduring Hope for the West
Setting: Fantasy | Developer: Intrepid Studios | Platform: PC | Model: Pay2Play
What kind of game is this? Ashes of Creation is a new sandbox MMORPG from Steven Sharif and his company Intrepid Studios. The head himself was a big fan of games like ArcheAge but wanted to do it even better. Thus, he used his own wealth and the money from fans through crowdfunding to build his dream game.
Ashes of Creation promises to offer many PvE contents, but the core focuses on battles for cities and associated PvP. There should also be caravan events like in ArcheAge.
The game offers 8 different classes that can later be combined, resulting in a total of 64 specializations. In the combat system, you can choose whether you prefer to tab-target or actively aim at enemies.
The main highlight, however, are the nodes.
What makes it so interesting? Ashes of Creation relies on a massive open world divided into so-called nodes. Each node can be conquered and expanded from a small tent to a huge metropolis. While the initial stages can be traversed quickly, upgrading a node to a metropolis will take several months.
It also focuses on social elements, such as electing a mayor, housing, taxes, and communal quests to enable the expansion.
- Each node also matches the appearance of the people who control it.
- As the level progresses, the area around the settlement also changes. New dungeons, bosses, or resources will be unlocked.
- Nodes are also connected to their neighbors and are under the control of one of five great castles, to which they have to pay taxes. These fortresses initially belong to NPC factions and will pass into the hands of players after the first conquest.
In PvP, a lot revolves around attacking and taking over nodes. Regular attacks on the castles, which are also controlled by players, also take place.
The real highlight for many, however, is that Ashes of Creation will be a major MMORPG from the West, with impressive graphics and a sophisticated concept. The last major games to come out here were ESO and WildStar, both released in 2014.
How has the development gone so far? In 2017, Ashes of Creation launched its Kickstarter campaign, raising nearly $3.3 million. Shortly thereafter, new founder packages were offered on the website, through which further funds were raised.
In August 2018, the release was announced for 2019, and they even presented a publishing partner. However, delays and the standalone game Ashes of Creation Apocalypse occurred, in which the combat system and servers of the game were tested. However, the game completely flopped and was shut down shortly thereafter.
Throughout 2020, the Ashes of Creation team accelerated and suddenly impressed with great gameplay. There was even a first alpha without an NDA. However, it quickly became clear that it was still years away from release.
In 2021, the transition to Unreal Engine 5 was announced, which further delayed development. The planned Alpha 2 was postponed from 2023 to 2024.
How likely is the release in 2024? 10%. In the new year, Alpha 2 is expected to start, allowing players to test the contents of Ashes of Creation for longer periods. After that, Beta 1 and Beta 2 are planned before the final release.
