Gaetan experienced what probably every witcher has gone through at some point: betrayal. He took a job in Velen to kill a forest spirit. After completing the job, he wanted to collect his payment, but only received a ridiculously small part of the agreed sum.
When he protested, the villagers lured him into a barn, where the rest of the money was supposedly located. There, they tried to coldly murder him from behind with a pitchfork.
This made Gaetan so angry that he slaughtered the entire village. Only a small girl survived because she reminded him of his deceased sister.
In Witcher 3, Geralt finds his fellow witcher shortly after the massacre and must decide whether to forgive the bloody deed or kill Gaetan for it.
