Those who play Grand Theft Auto 5 on PC have so far had to miss out on the improvements of the next-gen version for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Now, nearly 3 years later, GTA 5 Enhanced has also been released on Steam – but players are still angry.
The following improvements are promised by GTA 5 Enhanced for PC players:
- Improved graphics and performance, thanks to upscaling technologies like AMD FSR and Nvidia DLSS
- Ray tracing features such as ambient occlusion and global illumination of shadows and reflections
- Shorter loading times thanks to DirectStorage. At least when using an SSD
- 3D audio
- Exclusive content in GTA Online

Barely noticeable improvements, but even more problems in GTA Online
What is the criticism of the next-gen update? While GTA 5 Enhanced brings many new graphical features to PC on paper, the developers have also made some decisions that players find incomprehensible:
- The game is limited to a maximum of 120 FPS in the Enhanced Edition – this was not the case in the original version
- Some graphics options have reportedly disappeared according to a review on Steam, while others have been limited
- Another player on Steam is bothered by the lack of HDR support
Other players like L4bel report on Steam about crashes and error messages. Many also have problems transferring their characters from GTA Online to the Enhanced version.
A major issue is also the lack of text chat in GTA Online: Now there is only voice chat, which makes the online mode “unplayable” for players like Deadguy on Steam.
Rockstar delivers new subscription service for GTA 5 Enhanced
Criticism of the new subscription service: With GTA+, you get regular GTA dollars, exclusive access to offers in the Vinewood Club, and other monthly benefits for €7.99 per month. However, players are less enthusiastic about it:
- KeithTheBat writes in his review on Steam: “Rockstar has really done the absolute minimum to improve the game and the absolute maximum to integrate GTA+.”
- Gmork leaves a thumbs up, but his rating on Steam reads less positively: “You’ve got to hand it to you: No one can print money like you. First, you sell GTA 5 five times, then you give away the Enhanced version for ‘free’, only to follow it up with a membership that costs more than the coffee I need to process this madness.”
Currently, GTA 5 Enhanced has 50% positive comments on Steam with a rating of “mixed.” There is no crossplay between the legacy version of the game and GTA 5 Enhanced.
