On Steam, an indie game is currently enjoying great success, as it has become quite popular among some Twitch streamers like HandOfBlood and Maxim. A new DLC allows Brotato to rejuvenate even months after its release.
What is Brotato? Brotato is an arena shooter roguelite where you play as a potato that must defend itself against aliens using weapons. With each round and every alien you kill, you earn coins that can be spent on better weapons and equipment between rounds.
The weapons, equipment, and abilities available for purchase are so diverse that each run is unique, giving the game a high replay value. Brotato costs only €4.99 on Steam and is currently discounted by 40% until November 8, 2024.
You can get a first impression of the game with the early access trailer:
Despite its simple gameplay, Brotato is successful
How successful is Brotato? Since October 2022, an early access version of the game has been available. Until its release in June 2024, player numbers fluctuated, but since July 2024, the numbers have continued to climb. It is one of the most played games on the Steam Deck.
Brotato has recorded 38,000 concurrent players on Steam and saw a surge in player numbers of around 103 percent in October 2024 (via steamcharts).
Why is Brotato so successful? Part of the success can be attributed to the Twitch streamers who regularly play the game in their streams. Leading the way is HandOfBlood, who has been raving about the game since its release. He is a big fan of the game.
On Twitch, he is the streamer with the highest viewer count in the last 30 days. On average, he showcased the indie game to around 9,000 viewers on Twitch and likely contributed to the game’s success (via sullygnome).
The new DLC Abyssal Terrors has now been released, bringing with it a new map as well as new characters, weapons, and items. This has led HandOfBlood to play the game again.
Even though the gameplay is kept simple, Brotato enjoys great success thanks to numerous Twitch streamers. MeinMMO author Linda Baumgartl is also thrilled: A game on Steam let me play as a potato for 100 hours and I regret nothing – Currently costs less than 4 euros
