In this week, around 900 games were banned on Steam in Germany. Among them is the second best game to Borderlands that has ever been released.
Which games were banned? On Reddit, user derpystuff_ took the effort to compile all the games that were banned on the German Steam store page on April 29, 2026, with the help of SteamDB.
He created two lists. One list contains all 900 games unfiltered. The other list, however, is organized by how many reviews they received. And here, one game in particular stands out at number 1.
One of the affected games is Tales from the Borderlands. According to Metacritic, it is the second best game in the franchise that has ever been released, considering all platforms. On Xbox One, it managed to achieve 88/100 points. Only Borderlands 2 could obtain better ratings with 91 points.
Looking at the other games, many games from China or with rather unknown titles can be found. Yet, the question remains as to why a game over 20 years old is suddenly removed from Steam. However, users have a suspicion about this.
Over 900 games suddenly disappeared from Steam
Why was the ban imposed? So far, there is no official statement. However, in the comments of the Reddit thread, some users suspect that it might have to do with age ratings. Over time, Valve has required developers to fill out a form retroactively to keep their games available in Germany.
The original development studio of Tales from the Borderlands is Telltale Games. They went bankrupt some time ago. Therefore, users suspect that there simply hasn’t been anyone left who could have filled out the necessary form in time.
And without an age rating, a game may not be publicly displayed or advertised in Germany according to the law.
Can you still access the games? Currently, it should still be possible to have most of these titles gifted. Friends and acquaintances from other countries could buy the game on Steam and send it as a digital gift to the German account.
Alternatively, one can still purchase official keys on legitimate reseller sites like Humble Bundle. Otherwise, you currently have to resort to other PC game platforms like GOG, as the games there have not yet been affected by such a wave of bans.
