Sony’s State of Play had some titles in store that players can look forward to in the coming weeks and months. Among them is a venerable fighter jet series that should not be underestimated.
A few days before the Summer Game Fest, on June 02, 2026, Sony hosted a State of Play. In 70 minutes, they showcased many games, including Marvel’s Wolverine, Onimusha, and a new God of War. Among these announcements was also the latest trailer for Ace Combat: 8 Wings of Theve.
Compared to the other titles, it seems as though the game has gone under the radar, but for action fans, there could be a real hidden gem for October.
Fighter jet battles designed for fast-paced action
What kind of game is Ace Combat 8? The military series from Bandai Namco has a long tradition. The first installment, called Air Combat, was released in 1995 for the PS1. Since then, the series has regularly provided fans with new titles. The last installment, Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown, was released in 2019 and sold 7 million copies by 2026 (Source: Bandai Namco).
The series is not a classic simulation, as one might expect from a flight simulator. The games focus on an arcade-like experience. This means that the controls of the aircraft are not always super realistic and detailed; the focus is directly on the action. Additionally, veterans had a choice between two control schemes in the 7th installment.
The upcoming installment will bring back a campaign mode for single players. In this mode, you complete missions and purchase new jets, weapons, or upgrades with earned currency. In addition, cutscenes from a first-person perspective will provide insight into the story, focusing on the other team members.
There will also be a multiplayer mode, and it is said to be more extensive than ever. With a custom avatar, you will meet other players in online lobbies, with whom you can fight.
Ace Combat 8 could therefore be perfect for you if you want to feel like Tom Cruise in Top Gun but don’t want a classic simulation.
Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve will be regularly released on October 2nd. Those who acquire the Deluxe Edition can start on September 29th. In addition, you will receive various items in the edition – at least if you need such things. If you want to check out the predecessor beforehand: On Steam, part 7 is available for €9.59 until June 5th.
The State of Play seemed to have something for almost all types of players. But strangely, Sony itself did not show as many exclusive titles as one would expect, especially in such a challenging gaming era as today: The State of Play impresses with strong announcements, but where was Sony?
