The State of Play features many exciting trailers in over 70 minutes, but Sony is just a minor player in its own show despite God of War.
Summer is always an exciting time for gaming companies. The Summer Game Fest is coming up, and many developers and publishers are preparing their latest announcements. Sony and Microsoft are no exceptions, which is why the major corporations are presenting their own shows: the Xbox Showcase and Sony’s State of Play.
MeinMMO’s tech expert Benedikt Schlotmann saw an opportunity for Microsoft and Sony to temporarily regain the favor of gamers at these shows – and that is necessary. Gaming is getting more expensive, and both the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S have already increased in price over the past few months. Players need good reasons to buy a console.
After the State of Play, the question arises: Where was Sony? The company showed reasons to buy a PS5, but without God of War: Laufey, the latest installment in the series, it would have been just a minor player in its own show.
One of the few games that Sony showcased at the State of Play was Season 2 of Marathon:
The State of Play on the Back of Wolverine and God of War
The State of Play on June 2, 2026, lasted around 70 minutes and featured 25 different games with new trailers and announcements, including some exciting highlights:
- Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis – Release date trailer for the reinterpretation of Lara Croft’s first adventure
- Control Resonant – a new sequel to Control
- Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams – a new trailer for the “Resident Evil with Samurai”
- Rayman Legends Retold – announcement of the 3D remake
- ILL – a story trailer for the horror game
- Silent Hill: Townfall – a standalone spinoff of the Silent Hill series
- Ace Combat 8: Wings of the Thief – new installment in the jet-fighting simulation
- The Lost Wild – a gameplay trailer for the horror game featuring dinos
- Phantom Blade Zero – a new trailer for the dark martial-arts game
- Bancho the Chef – a trailer for the sequel to Dave the Diver that tells the backstory of the chef
The big catch here is clear: Of the 25 games shown, only 4 were internally produced by Sony: God of War, Marvel’s Wolverine, and Until Dawn 2, accompanied by a trailer for Season 2 of Marathon, Bungie’s latest Extraction shooter.
God of War took up about 20 minutes of the show. Without the lengthy presentation, Sony would have had just about 12 minutes of airtime for its own State of Play, of which 8 minutes were for Wolverine. And even though I think Marathon is much better than the reputation of the shooter suggests:
A trailer for Season 2 of a live-service game that is also playable on Xbox and Steam does not count as an argument for buying a PS5.
Are God of War and Wolverine Enough to Justify Buying a PS5?
The PlayStation 5 has been on the market for a few years now. This means that anyone who really wants a PS5 has probably already gotten one. Whether God of War Laufey, Marvel’s Wolverine, and Until Dawn 2 are really enough arguments for purchasing a PS5 after the price increase in April is a subjective decision, and each individual must determine this for themselves.
The chances may indeed look bad, even though the God of War series and the previous Spider-Man games by Insomniac Games (who are also making Wolverine) are very popular and appreciated by gamers: With God of War: Ragnarök and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, there have already been PS5 games targeting the audience of GoW-Laufey and Wolverine. Thus, potential buyers may already own a PS5.
Overall, Sony’s appearance at the State of Play seems a bit thin. The show lasted over an hour during one of the most important weeks for new announcements in the gaming industry, and Sony only showcased 3 new games at its own event – just a few weeks after Sony and Bungie announced that they would be discontinuing a Sony game with Destiny 2, for which even a trailer for its final expansion, scheduled to be released on June 9, was not shown: Destiny 2 is ending after 9 years, announcing the last update, and speaking of a new beginning
