In “Star Wars Episode 5: The Empire Strikes Back”, the cyborg Lobot has a brief appearance. However, a comic now provides, 43 years after the film’s release, additional background information about the seemingly inconspicuous character and explains the important role he plays in the Star Wars universe.
The character Lobot appears in Star Wars Episode 5: The Empire Strikes Back from 1980 only as an inconspicuous, silent side character.
However, a new comic revealed some background information about the cyborg and explains his role within the story.
Here you can see a trailer for Star Wars Episode 5, the film in which Lobot also has a small appearance:
Lobot is Lando Calrissian’s best friend and moral anchor
What do we learn about Lobot in the comic? In the comic Star Wars #40 by Charles Soule and Madibek Musabekov, which was released on November 1, 2023, Lando tries to save Lobot because: His cyborg implants have been corrupted by an android virus.
In this context, there is a flashback scene that shows an important moment between the two and reveals more about their friendship.
Lando tells the cyborg: “Everyone in this industry agrees on one point: You have to tell someone the truth. Someone has to make sure you stay honest. If you start lying to that person, you’re heading towards the edge of a cliff… For me, you are that person, Lobot.”
The cyborg thus represents not only Lando’s best buddy but also a moral anchor and is the only person he would never lie to.
Lobot therefore lays the foundation for the positive character development from smuggler and fraudster to hero that Calrissian undergoes in the films.

Lobot has only a few scenes in Star Wars Episode 5: The Empire Strikes Back. However, there was originally more video material about the character; but the sequences did not make it into the final film and were cut.
That even the smallest details, like the inconspicuous side character, can play a role in the Star Wars films was humorously illustrated by an anecdote that Leia’s actress Carrie Fisher († December 2016) recorded in her book:
“Star Wars” director had a strange clothing rule for Princess Leia – “No underwear in space”
