On Steam there is currently a hidden gem for 4 euros that has been haunting MeinMMO author Johanna for 7 years: Kingdom Two Crowns. And even though tower defense is really not her genre.
If I had to ban 3 genres from the gaming world forever, they would be strategy (it just feels like work), tower defense (why should I just sit still all the time?), and city building simulation (I would rather live in it than build it).
Funny that a game I lovingly call my Minecraft game
combines exactly these 3 things. Minecraft game
because I have at least 2 weeks every year where I play the game intensively. Just like others do with Minecraft.
It’s Kingdom Two Crowns, a side-scroller in pixelated graphics. Yes, this graphics style may not be for everyone, but the animations are full of details and give the game a certain charm.
- On Steam you can currently get the game for only 3.99 euros instead of 19.99 euros. A discount of about 80%. Also, the various add-ons are discounted.
You can watch the trailer for the game here:
Kingdom Two Crowns: Everything I actually don’t want to play
During the day, you build your castle, explore the surroundings, and find new resources that you can use to improve your kingdom. At night, you dash back behind the safe walls with your soldiers and have to defend against the shadows, as they want your treasures and especially your crown!
So the game combines all 3 genres that I usually would never play. But Kingdom Two Crowns does it in a way that has captivated me for 7 years.
The game is challenging. At first, it is still quite lenient with the shadows, but at some point, when you have unlocked island after island, more monsters appear that bring a whole different caliber. Then there are blood moons. These are nights when the monsters attack in much greater numbers and with special monsters, thus providing another challenge.
There are also seasons in the game, and winter can quickly take away the sources of income that made you rich in the other months.
- My tip: I prefer playing Kingdom Two Crowns on my Nintendo Switch. That way I can comfortably take my kingdom to the sofa and defend it from there.
More often than not, I have ended my 2-week phase of Kingdom Two Crowns in frustration because my crown was stolen again. In fact, I have never completed Kingdom Two Crowns. Maybe that’s why I try again every year.
By now, I have a run where I am really good! So really good! But that can quickly change and bring me back full of drive next year.
