The bots in Rocket League were a big problem, even when it was still on Steam. Now they are gone, but the community is paying a painful price for it.
How did they get rid of the cheaters? Rocket League has been part of Epic Games for a while now, which is also behind Fortnite. In addition to their own launcher, one of the largest shooters in the world, and the well-known Unreal Engine, the developers also have their own anti-cheat system.
With Easy Anti-Cheat, they have now equipped their car soccer game Rocket League and freed it from the bots. The bots had been annoying the community for a long time because they were cheating their way into high ranks by swapping wins.
The new anti-cheat has at least temporarily locked out the cheaters, but it has also made a beloved tool of the community unavailable.
Here you can watch an ancient trailer of Rocket League:
The End of Bakkesmod
What is this tool? The Bakkesmod was an all-in-one tool for Rocket League that added many convenience features to the game. As a kind of hub, developers could create their own plugins for modification and thus provide players with features that had long been missing from the developers.
This allowed players to start improved training games, view additional stats, use set items, and automatically save their replays. The latter was also good for many creators to watch the best goals again.
But the new anti-cheat has put a stop to the tool. The Easy Anti-Cheat blocks the modification and therefore also all functions it provided. For the developer, this means saying goodbye.
What does the developer say about the end? Bakkes, the creator of Bakkesmod, addresses the users in a message on his website. He also explains how many users used his tool. It is said to have been 750,000 players every day and even 1.5 million players a week who used the tool.
However, now is the moment to say goodbye to the tool. He explains in his statement:
With this in mind, I have decided to stop the active development of the mods. The introduction of Easy Anti-Cheat seems to me the right time to end the project. Both I and the team of principal contributors who have helped over the years have said goodbye to the game, and although we have kept the operation going, we simply lack the passion and drive to support the project adequately. This means that BakkesMod will no longer function on game versions released on or after April 28.

On Reddit, fans say goodbye in a post and thank the developers. For many, it is an emotional moment because hobby developers have enabled many features that are still missing from the core game.
The players have gotten rid of the bots and cheaters for now, but they are paying for it with the end of arguably the biggest mod of their game. Whether this will be the right decision for Epic Games or whether it will soon become apparent that the title will become less interesting for many players without the mods remains to be seen.
