In Pokémon GO portals occasionally appear in the sky. But what, or rather who, is behind it?
There is a phenomenon in Pokémon GO that you might have noticed yourself: appearances in the sky that look like portals. There are events where you can observe this sky phenomenon from time to time.
We have looked into it for you: Who or what is behind it? And what do these portals bring to the game?
A Pokémon is behind the portals
Who is responsible for the portals? Behind these portals is the Pokémon Hoopa. It is a mysterious Pokémon that has existed since Generation 6. It can appear in its contained form, possessing the types Psychic and Ghost, as well as in its unleashed form with the types Psychic and Dark.
Hoopa has golden rings on its body that the Pokémon can stretch into any size. From these rings, Hoopa can create portals and teleport objects or even Pokémon from other places.
If you compare the rings with Hoopa’s portals, you will recognize a strong similarity. Both forms of Hoopa are also among the best attackers in Pokémon GO.

What do the portals bring? In Pokémon GO, the portals bring Pokémon, for example, bosses in raids that Hoopa brings into the world with its portals. This is the case in the “Path to Kalos” event, where Hoopa’s portals ensure that different bosses appear every day in the 5-star raids.
The portals are purely cosmetic and are meant to create atmosphere in the game. So if you see such a portal in the sky, it does not mean that a new raid has started immediately after the appearance of a portal.
They therefore have no direct influence on the game but are rather meant to enhance the atmosphere and content of an event and provide some lore in Pokémon GO.
Hoopa, with its portals, is among the Pokémon that possess special abilities. There are also other Pokémon that fall out of the line compared to many others. These also include the Ultra Beasts, which look like discarded Pokémon, which they essentially are.
