Criticism from many players regarding Sony’s future strategy without discs still echoes. Players want to implement their boycott even more actively now, but some doubt how consistently this will continue.
What kind of boycott is it about? After Sony announced in early July that it would stop offering physical versions for PlayStation games starting in 2028, significant criticism arose from players. This has been intensified even after a month, especially after PSN was down.
Now some players are planning a blackout as a boycott, as Anonymous spread on x.com. To participate, one should refrain from using the console or simply log out from August 23 to August 30. This is justified by several decisions from Sony, which have distanced themselves from their fanbase for years
. Meanwhile, the post has been viewed over 1.9 million times.
For many critics of Sony’s direction, this should actually sound good, but this boycott is causing a discrepancy within the community.
How long does such a boycott last?
How does the community react to the boycott call? Some users appreciate the idea. For instance, @Whitewolf323 (x.com) writes that he welcomes the idea, he has other options, and hasn’t touched his PS5 since the announcement. He and some other commentators want to participate in the planned blackout.
But there is also a counter-movement. Some users (x.com) do not want to participate, and some doubt how effective such a boycott will be – especially since no major titles are released during the week of the planned boycott.

. Another user (Reddit) adds that you won’t have to wait long: When Call of Duty: Black Ops 1 and 2 were released (only digitally), they were bestsellers. This was also reported by The Gamer.
The entire discussion around the boycott seems to have opposing voices against the boycotters, which according to x user @nuhre has also turned hostile.
GTA 6 is a relevant example here, as this title no longer has a classic physical version. There will be a box, but it will only contain a code to redeem the digital version. This is precisely what Sony’s decision for 2028 will likely lead to.
In the case of GTA 6, one can be quite sure that the biggest topic at launch will not be the missing disc. However, before that, Sony’s own blockbuster Marvel’s Wolverine will be released on September 15, 2026. At launch, it will be interesting to see how relevant the current controversy will be.
