In December 2024, League of Legends introduced a new system for acquiring skins. Many players criticize that Riot has hidden desirable skins behind an expensive paywall. Now, it has hit a long-awaited skin.
Which skin is it? “Sahn-Uzal Mordekaiser” is an Exalted skin for Mordekaiser, which is set to be released on March 5, 2025. It will replace the current “Light Serpent Sett” skin in the sanctum.
Sahn-Uzal was Mordekaiser’s name before he became the terrible warlord of the dead. In keeping with the champion’s backstory, Mordekaiser will be depicted in the skin as the former king of Noxus.

LoL hides skins behind gacha gameplay
Why is the skin so expensive? In League of Legends, you can obtain skins through so-called “Sparks” since December 2024. The Sparks are a type of loot box system from Riot. When you purchase a Spark, you can receive a reward. These rewards are divided into tiers from S to B. The chances of getting them can be viewed in the game’s launcher.
S-tier rewards are exclusive skins that you can only get with the Sparks. The chance of pulling such a skin is 0.5%. In the A-tier, you have a 10% chance of getting a previously released skin. The B-tier gives you a chance of 89.5% of receiving a profile avatar and sometimes mythical essences.
The price of a Spark is 400 Riot points. This translates to about €3.50. Since the chance of pulling the skin is only 0.5%, it may take several attempts. However, after a minimum of 80 Sparks, you will receive a guaranteed S-tier reward. That would be about €280.
Players are disappointed with Riot
How is the community reacting? A skin based on the lore of League of Legends is a dream come true for many players – and that’s why many players criticize the decision to make the skin only available through Sparks. Reddit user Janus_22 (via reddit.com) writes:
- “They really took a skin that people have wanted for years and said: We’re releasing it – but only for those who have heaps of money to spare and don’t actually care about the character.”
YouTuber and Twitch streamer NickyBoi (via x.com) is also disappointed and responds:
- “One of my absolute dream skins has always been Sahn-Uzal or the Mordekaiser before his resurrection, but all that anticipation is gone because he’s stuck in a $200 FOMO gacha shop. I should be excited right now, but instead I’m just sad.”
Skins that you can obtain through the Sparks in the sanctum are only available for a limited time. This can trigger fear of missing out (FOMO) in some players.
Already in January, Riot upset players with some decisions. They removed free Hextech chests under the pretext that players were not spending enough money.
