Loot boxes are one of the ways in Apex Legends to supply you with skins and other cosmetics. They are even the only way to obtain a special set. A player really wanted this special set and dug deep into his pockets.
A player spent $500 on loot boxes in Apex Legends to get an heirloom set. Although he knew that loot boxes normally weren’t worth it for him, he couldn’t stop buying new boxes.
How did that happen to him? The user BAE339 shared his story on reddit. He talked about how he usually doesn’t fall for random loot boxes. But that was different with Apex Legends.
Because here, the heirloom set is guaranteed. If it wasn’t included in 500 boxes, the next box is guaranteed to contain the heirloom set. Right now, there is only one heirloom set, and that is for Wraith, one of the legends of Apex Legends. Her set is currently the guaranteed loot.
Since many of his friends and many streamers already have the set, and Wraith is his “main,” he didn’t expect to need the full 500 boxes. However, he really had the worst luck and only got his set in his guaranteed box. One loot box costs through microtransactions 100 Apex Coins, which is about $1 or €1, not counting discounts.
That’s why he shares his story: BAE339 calls for people to “roast” him for his stupidity. However, his post was meant to show something.
He wanted to make it clear to people that not only the “uneducated and children” fall for loot boxes. He himself studied, has a full-time job, and a girlfriend, so he leads a regulated life. The greed for loot can catch anyone.
How the community reacts: BAE339 receives no sympathy for his story, which he didn’t ask for anyway. Many discuss that loot boxes aren’t worth it at all and that they would never spend so much money or buy a skin at all.

This is the heirloom set of Wraith
Which set is it? The special items are an “heirloom” set for Wraith. The heirloom set consists of three parts:
- a banner pose
- a melee weapon skin
- an intro quip
In the banner pose, Wraith throws some kunai, which she also gets as a skin for her melee attack. The weapon does not deal more damage, it just looks different.
What is special about the set? When you receive the heirloom set, you receive it in the loot box immediately in full. There are no separate parts of it. Furthermore, it does not appear in your collection until you have received it.
Since this is the only heirloom set so far, it is particularly popular among Wraith players.
