The MMORPG EVE Online celebrated its 18th birthday on May 6. MeinMMO spoke with Creative Director Bergur Finnbogasson and Brand Director Saemi Hermannsson about their game and their favorite memories.

MeinMMO: You have been working in the gaming industry for over 10 years. What have been the biggest changes that have happened and affected EVE?
Bergur Finnbogasson: Yes, it is true that I have been working in the gaming industry for over 10 years now. I had no significant MMO experience before I joined CCP. I did play Ultima Online and Everquest back then, but in the years since my joining, there has been a tremendous shift away from games that were very hardcore, to casual. And then back to hardcore.
And I am also very happy that the world hasn’t shifted too far into casual gaming. At the same time, I think that many casual games have learned a lot, specifically from the growth of mobile games.
I feel that many players have a lower tolerance for overly complex user interfaces. Usability has become a much more important element in gaming. And that is something we are currently working on. The simplification and usefulness of the user interface in EVE. It is definitely one of the biggest changes.

Another notable thing is game streaming, which was a huge change. It has definitely changed the way people consume and play games. Ten years ago, you just played the game, but today even single-player games have this social element that comes from streaming and shared engagement as a community.
And lastly, I find that games have been “normalized.” It is no longer something exotic to play video games. It is not just a handful of people anymore. Games are now simply part of daily life, it is much more relaxed. It used to be a niche and now it is completely normal. It is almost strange if someone doesn’t play games.
MeinMMO: How have the community and players changed over the years?
Bergur Finnbogasson: EVE Online is a massively multiplayer online sandbox game. The game has changed significantly over the years. I often have to remind the developers that when the game was released, dial-up modems were still used. And if someone called the players at home, they would lose their connection to the game.
Most successful games have a lifespan of about 4 to 5 years. We have survived for about four times that. We have revamped the game completely 3 to 4 times over the years when looking at all the changes. But the core DNA of the product has remained intact. It is still this dark, grim, harsh world. It is hard to survive in it alone, and it’s better to fly in a group with other players to face all the challenges it throws at you.
For many years, we maintained the position that EVE should be hard to learn and even harder to master. Now we are working hard to make EVE easier to learn, but still very hard to master. It should always be hard to master.
What has not changed over the years is the community. The incredibly strong community that keeps the game alive, that develops the world further. The amazing alliances that shape the universe. And that is basically the one big thing that has kept the game alive, making it relevant and exciting.

Saemi Hermannsson: The one thing that I found extremely interesting in the last 2.5 years has been our conversations with the community about how important new players are for EVE. How important it is to not only attract new players to the game but also to nurture them.
Bergur made the point about mastering and easier understanding at the beginning. And it is amazing to see how much the community has embraced this concept. How they understand that it is important for us to invest a lot of time, effort, and focus to help new players find their footing in the game.
It is a blessing and sometimes also a curse how smart our players are. But that is one of those situations where it is definitely a blessing. They can understand the concept of the importance of new players, as Bergur said. More players mean more content, and more content means a better game. It is just the nature of things.

MeinMMO: One of CCP’s main rules regarding EVE is that you try not to interfere in the events within the game as much as possible. What were the reasons for this decision?
Bergur Finnbogasson: Primarily, it is that we wanted to uphold the promise of a true sandbox. It is this idea that we are the stewards of this universe, and the players drive the game forward. Over the years, we had to adjust our views on this topic a bit. We had to establish certain rules.
Typically, we take the stance of “player control comes first,” but to develop successful systems, we need to put our fingers on certain things. But that is one of the great appeals of EVE Online, that it is so highly community-driven, and there are many things that are controlled by the players.
We can only guess what will happen, and it is super scary. We don’t know anything else, so we always do it this way. For most of my colleagues who work on MMOs, the first question always is: “How the hell can you trust that your players won’t just do terrible things?”
There is this crazy measurement used by many people in game development called “Time to Penis.” It is the time it takes for a new feature or a new player to have a penis drawn somewhere. And EVE is full of such elements. And in many cases, we just welcome it instead of fighting against it.
There have been so many features in the game that we planned in a certain way, and the players used them for something completely different. And this is the beauty of EVE Online. We give the players the tools to make the most of it.
MeinMMO: How do you decide when to intervene in the game?
Bergur Finnbogasson: That depends heavily on the case at hand and it is a very multidimensional decision. Of course, there are customer support-level issues where we have clear guidelines. And then we have things like the economy, where we do not intervene.
We have some levers that we can pull to, for example, change taxes. But we do not intervene when someone is manipulating the market. That is entirely in the players’ hands.
One thing that we have changed over the years is that we have become stricter with griefing new players. There were elements in the game that made it extremely easy to grief new players. And we have changed the game to make this activity harder. Of course, it still happens. But that’s about the strongest action we have taken to intervene in the ecosystem in EVE.
And then there are, of course, threats that transfer into real life. We have a very low tolerance for those.
In online games, “griefers” are players who deliberately try to take the fun out of the game for other players. Often, griefers are high-level players who attack and repeatedly kill or otherwise harass newcomers.

MeinMMO: One situation in which CCP intervened was the Battle of M2-XFE,which caused massive server lag. WWB2 is far from over, and players are expecting more huge battles. How do you plan to address the problem from the developer side?
Bergur Finnbogasson: That is an interesting and philosophical question. We are basically in an arms race with our players when it comes to epic battles in EVE Online. We are now in a situation where the number of players in a fight in EVE was around 4,000 or 5,000 players. And in M2 we had about 12,000 or 13,000 players trying to get into the system. And they were frustrated.
One of the problems that always arises is that we can rewrite the code. We do that constantly. But if we raise the limit to 8,000, the new fights will be at 9,000 players, and the game is bad.
If we raise it to 97,000 players, people on Twitter will complain that they showed up with 101,000 players and nothing worked, and the game is bad. It is a really tricky matter.
World War Bee 2 (WWB2) is a massive war that has been raging in EVE Online since July 2020. In it, the two major factions PAPI Coalition and The Imperium meet. Its previous peak was the massive battle in the M2-XFE system, in which over 12,000 players participated.
Through Time Dilation, the in-game time in EVE Online is greatly slowed down, allowing not all effects to occur at once and extremely quickly. This is to conserve server resources. In the Battle of M2-XFE, time was reduced to 10% of normal game speed.
We have, of course, features like Time Dilation and battle logging. But it will always remain an arms race, and it is also something that we continually test and optimize. It is a beautiful problem to fall in love with. It is a problem where the biggest companies in the world call us regularly and say: “Hey, we have a thing. Do you want to test it?”
When EVE first came out, we actually had to borrow servers from the Pentagon to get the game running. I hope we didn’t melt them completely. But right now we are in a situation where it is not a hardware problem but a software problem. We need to delve deeper into the software part of our servers and on the front, we are working on interesting things.
Saemi Hermannsson: To address what Bergur said: We have been at war with our community for 18 years, and for 18 years we have been losing. But we will keep pushing the boundaries. In the largest battles, all the world records in gaming history actually belong to us.
We keep discovering and experimenting with how this can be improved. But when the numbers get so high and the stakes get so great, it is like Murphy’s Law. Anything that can go wrong will go wrong.
What is very positive is when you compare the record of WWB2 with our record from 2018. The community has been super understanding and has educated new players and those who didn’t understand what was going on. They explain what was happening behind the scenes.
It has been good to discuss this with the community. There are great opinion leaders within the community who are best suited to explain to other players what is going on.
MeinMMO: I have been following the battles on the site called New Eden Post and they provide very detailed reports about what is happening, explaining the different phases of the war, which is understandable even for people like me. What actions from the community have been your favorites so far in that regard?
Saemi Hermannsson: I don’t really have favorites, but I watch many different streams and they all have their positives. There are many meta shows on Sundays, I try to tune in to Talking in Stations, I follow the “Declaration of War” podcast and am on their Discord. Less than 10 is another podcast that I listen to.
I could keep listing more, it is a way for me to learn more about EVE and look into the minds of the players to understand their perspectives better. We are truly blessed with this community’s hardness.
There are reaction shows to new events in the game and there are even reaction shows to these reaction shows. A political cycle that keeps spinning. People put out controversial opinions about what is going on and what will happen. And the fascinating part is the diversity of the podcasts. You have some about fleet command, then focus on finance and economics, then there are people who talk about the lore and what is happening in the game.
Bergur Finnbogasson: The Twitch channels that Saemi mentioned are like TV stations. Their production value is incredibly high. But you have the TV station that belongs to different alliances and coalitions in EVE. They are highly political.
So you have a station that really tries to rally its side in the war. They present everything their side does in a positive light and try to keep morale high. While another is really working hard to bring it down and ensure that their side has the latest information and is ready for the upcoming tasks.

The propaganda war is massive. Wars in EVE often revolve around rallying your own troops and keeping people engaged. It is about your own community having more endurance than the other corporation.
Imperium currently posts EVE songs on YouTube every few weeks. It is one of my favorite channels on YouTube. They have released some songs about what they did and called their troops together. It is incredible.
Saemi Hermannsson: The Goons released a song called “We didn’t crash the Server” and that is the epitome of the community content that is being released right now. It is political, but it is still good content. The skill behind it is so high, it cannot be ignored.
In EVE, players write the history
MeinMMO: On their birthdays, people often look back at the most important events in their lives. If you had to choose, what would they be for you in EVE Online?
Bergur Finnbogasson: That is a mean question. Who is your favorite child? Hmm… The Chappy Birthday Bash was a beautiful moment in the history of EVE. It is one of those moments when the game becomes so much more than what you have created. A player had a terminal illness, and he wanted to have one last birthday battle. You can’t even imagine.
Then of course Project Discovery. It was one of the projects that became much bigger than we originally hoped for. It was also beautiful that we were able to give something back to the community and science.
The monument for Katia Sae. She was a player who traveled to every system in the game and took screenshots there. It took years and years, and we built a statue for her.

Saemi Hermannsson: Katia! When you asked the question, I immediately thought of the moment when I had the most goosebumps. It is these individual achievements because everyone always focuses on the wars and fights, which are of course great.

The new expansion Burning Crusade is on the starting blocks for WoW Classic. We at MeinMMO were able to conduct an interview with Holly Longdale, Lead Producer, and Brian Birmingham, the Lead Software Engineer.
What is the interview about? In the conversation with Holly Longdale and Brian Birmingham, we talked about the upcoming release of Burning Crusade, the general appeal of WoW Classic, player numbers, and also the upcoming Deluxe Edition.
MeinMMO: First of all, of course, the most important question: Can you tell us something about the release date of Burning Crusade Classic?
Holly: Yes! I’m so glad you asked. On May 18, we will release our pre-patch for Burning Crusade, and that is the moment when players can decide whether to progress to Burning Crusade or remain in the Classic era.
If they want both, there is a service called “cloning”. This allows you to get a copy of your character and continue with it in both games.
We will also introduce blood elves and draenei and allow jewelcrafting up to level 300. Additionally, there will be a series of pre-patch events where some creatures will invade the world.
On June 1 [Editor’s note: For us on June 2 at 00:00 Uhr], the Dark Portal will open. So everything is moving pretty quickly, and we are already very close.

MeinMMO: In the pre-patch, players will be able to decide whether they want to switch to TBC or not. How does it work, and more importantly: Will items and especially guilds be preserved?
Brian: That’s a good question, and unfortunately, the guild will not be preserved if you remain in the Classic era. However, if you switch to Burning Crusade Classic, it will be preserved. We decided to handle it this way. Based on surveys we conducted, most players wanted to switch to Burning Crusade. And we are very pleased about that.
So you will be able to keep your guild and mailbox if you go into Burning Crusade Classic. However, if you decide to go into the Classic era, we hope you’ll find the opportunity to explore the world again and make new friends who have decided to stay with you there.
Adjustments to weapons, jewelcrafting, and the drums
MeinMMO: We’ve already talked to you at BlizzCon 2021 about WoW Classic and Burning Crusade. What have you learned from the beta and changed based on the feedback?
Holly: There are so many players who still remember what happened in 2007, even though it’s hard to remember exactly. When these players return and experience it again, it raises some questions. But Brian will surely be able to tell you more about that.
Brian: Sure. A good example of that was the craftable weapons that could be made by the blacksmith. They were one-handed and you could use two of them. However, for most of Burning Crusade, that wasn’t true at all. During the beta, we then sat down and realized: “Oh yes, that was a change late in the expansion, and it doesn’t make sense now in this early phase. So we made them mainhand-only again.
Another example is actually more of a bug, namely the ability to unlearn jewelcrafting and still retain the specific bonuses that the profession brought. And that was something that wasn’t intended at the time of design. It was just a technical limitation. So when I looked back and wondered: “Hey, if I unlearned jewelcrafting and still retained the bonuses, should that still work? No, it shouldn’t.”
At that time there simply wasn’t a way to do that. And we have since developed one. So we made a corresponding change.
MeinMMO: As close as you want to be to the original, there are still a few bigger changes you are making, such as to the war drums.
Brian: So the drums are a system that we wanted to tackle before the expansion, as they were an important part of every competitive guild. The reason for this is that there was nothing preventing them from having constant rotations. The buff lasted 30 seconds and had a cooldown of 2 minutes. In a large raid, all the buffs overlap, and you essentially have the buff permanently throughout the raid.
We have been concerned from the beginning that this would not fit WoW, also because we want everyone to be able to be successful with any profession and not just as a leatherworker. Otherwise, everyone would feel drawn to that one profession.
So we went back and looked at why it was only the case with some patches, and the first thing we looked at was that earlier versions of the drums weren’t as powerful. So we restored these original drums that were a bit weaker; they had a cast time, a smaller radius, but were still technically overlapping.
We wanted to try this out to see where the drums are similarly overpowered and where we can bring some balance. But some classes were still able to use the drums between their attack and spell timings. For other classes, it meant a bit of DPS loss, but overall, more people chose to be leatherworkers anyway.
So we decided to introduce a debuff that was implemented right after Burning Crusade and came with Lich King. So you can only benefit from the drums once every two minutes, corresponding to the cooldown of the drums.
It was a tough decision. Because as you said, it’s a small deviation from how we originally did things. And we want to ensure that we do it with the best intentions of the time in mind.

“We approach the Classic content with the expectation that someone will defeat it on release day”
MeinMMO: However, the proximity to the original can be a problem. For example, you need at least 3 physical classes to fight Nightbane, and that can be very frustrating. Is that supposed to stay the same at release and if so, why did you decide that?
Brian: The general reason is that we want players to experience the content again as it was at launch. This is also the general philosophy: “This is something that existed back then that people enjoyed and had a good time with. And we want to ensure that they have the opportunity to experience it again.”
Honestly, I’m not familiar with that specific mechanic you’re referring to, but if it was introduced or removed in a later patch, we want players to experience that “Pre-Nerf Post-Nerf” progression. The intention is to start things off in their pre-nerf state, so people can experience the harder, more challenging, and sometimes additional mechanics that were originally there. And we can already see that players are benefiting from 15 years of experience with WoW and can handle the tough bosses.
MeinMMO: Yes, I’m sure many guilds will progress quickly in the raids.
Holly: I have no doubt about that.
MeinMMO: Even in Classic, the guilds were extremely quick with the raids.
Brian: Yes, absolutely. We generally approach the Classic content with the expectation that someone will defeat it on the day of release. No question about it, because people have had 15 years to practice these things and become familiar with WoW overall.
Since we are trying to recreate a well-known experience, players can prepare much more than they could with the original version. And so that’s actually to be expected. But there are still a lot of players who won’t kill it right on the first day, but who will learn through experienced players coming back and new players who have experienced it before and want to teach them. So, while we certainly expect the content to be defeated on the first day, it is still a significant challenge for people experiencing it for the first time.
Holly: The number of players planning to prepare for the content is unprecedented. They are already active in the beta and trying to perfect their strategies. Some are even going into the modern Burning Crusade to train there. This has never occurred in this form before.
We are also receiving planning around arena teams. People are starting to think about what the teams will look like. And yes, it’s really cool to see all these players and get an insight into how they will tackle Burning Crusade.
MeinMMO: Since we are already on the topic of changes, I would like to introduce an idea from the community. There was a desire to unlock certain items that only existed in Classic account-wide so they can be taken to Retail. Have you considered such a function?
Holly: We had this idea as well. And to be honest, we thought about it and decided against it. That was a conscious decision when we launched Classic. There are basically two things that speak against it:
The first is that there is simply a feeling of fulfillment for people who have it in Retail WoW. That they can show off and say: “I was definitely there back then”
But at the same time, the other reason is that we didn’t want Classic to be populated by a bunch of players who were only there because they wanted something from modern WoW, but we want people to play Classic because they want to experience exactly that.
We want players to choose the game that they enjoy the most and not what brings them cool items.
In WoW Burning Crusade Classic, you will venture into the Outlands, where you will also encounter the area of Netherstorm.

MeinMMO: When you talk about people wanting to play Classic, what do you think is special about Classic? What makes it so exciting for people?
Holly: Of course, there is first the nostalgic component. Experiencing a game that came out in 2004 again. And then Burning Crusade came in 2007. WoW was simply different than it is now. The great thing about our subscription system is that you can now experience all three games: Classic, TBC, and Retail WoW.
As our surveys show, it was especially a different pace back then. The experience and the community of players were also different back then. That’s something people want to experience again, as it was from 2004 to 2007.
I personally am a casual player, so I love to run around, meet people, and role-play. When I come to Stormwind, I greet people with “For the Alliance” and in general, people communicate differently. In modern games, it’s too much about performance for me, but I want to enjoy everything. My play sessions are also significantly shorter. But I love spending my weekends and longer nights exploring a world just like I did back then. Classic and now the beta are great for that.
Brian: I can agree with that, except for the part about the Alliance. I mean, the phrase is “For the Horde,” right? It just sounds dumb when an Alliance player says it.
But seriously: The cool thing about Classic is that you take things much more consciously and feel: “Okay, I need to figure out how to defeat this enemy best.” Sometimes the open world is just as intimidating as the raids, especially since you are often alone. And so it often happens that you seek help to quest and level together, while modern WoW is much more straightforward and focused. The high difficulty levels are reserved for Mythics and raids there.
MeinMMO: This difficulty and also leveling itself make the game much more time-consuming. Do you think that players who are now adults, with families and jobs, will find the time to play Classic?
Brian: Absolutely, it works at least for me. I have a lot of fun with Classic and will also enjoy it with TBC. I also have a family and a full-time job, and contrary to some perceptions out there, I still play the games after work. But yes, it can be done with less playtime.
In addition, WoW can be played in various ways. You can just spend time exploring the world and leveling up. You can also complete a variety of dungeons and raids. There are several dungeons in every zone that you can play while leveling up and at max level as well.
Holly: And there are arena teams! We expect players to have a lot of fun and spend time here. And as Brian said, there is just so much to do, and I can be online for hours. I just love this huge world.
Brian: One point about PvP is also that we are accommodating the players here. We will offer region-wide matchmaking and also have a modern matchmaking algorithm that should match teams better than it did back then in Burning Crusade.
Classic has exceeded expectations
MeinMMO: Player numbers are always an interesting topic. How satisfied are you with the development of the numbers in Classic?
Brian: Well, we had high expectations, and to be honest, I had even higher expectations myself. But they have even surpassed my expectations, and I really expected a lot; I love this game very much.
Holly: The love and admiration for Classic remain unbroken, which is why we are delivering what the community asks for. That is why we implemented Classic in the first place, and that is why we continue to offer the Classic era while we release Burning Crusade.
There are a lot of people who love the old world and its mechanics. And we continue to keep an eye on what the community wants.
MeinMMO: And how do you think the player numbers will develop in the future?
Brian: We expect that most people will want to switch to Burning Crusade. We conducted some surveys, and that’s what they showed. That’s also why the guilds, for example, progress to Burning Crusade.
MeinMMO: Holly, you joined Blizzard in 2020 and previously worked on Everquest and other MMOs. How helpful is an outside perspective on the game, and how significant was your influence on TBC?
