Kaitlyn Siragusa (29) is the most successful streamer on Twitch as Amouranth. She is known for pushing the boundaries of Twitch’s guidelines and has been banned from the streaming platform multiple times. The first ban hit her in September 2019 – and really kickstarted her career.
What kind of ban was it? Amouranth is a controversial figure on Twitch. She became known for licking her microphone in ASMR streams or lounging in a kiddie pool. This often puts her at the edge of what is permissible according to the strict guidelines of the streaming platform.
Amouranth received her first ban after a stream on September 8, 2019, due to an apparent mishap. The streamer was lying on the floor playing with her dog – while not wearing any underwear and exposing herself several times, seemingly without realizing it.
Before Amouranth was banned for violating the guidelines concerning nudity and inappropriate clothing, viewers had already created and spread clips of the mishap. The recordings ended up in the largest streaming community on reddit, r/LivestreamFail (LSF).
A thread in the LivestreamFail subreddit gathered over 21,700 upvotes. Apparently, nothing better could have happened to Amouranth.
Clips, which are short excerpts from streams often taken out of context, can spread surprisingly quickly.

What consequences did Amouranth face? The streamer got off relatively lightly and was banned for only 3 days. Amouranth returned to Twitch and continued as before. However, due to the incident, she suddenly became the talk of the town.
In a post from September 13, 2019, Amouranth wrote that the whole “ban drama” made her more relevant than anything she had done until then. She shared a screenshot from Google Trends showing the search queries related to her name.
The streamer also mentioned the subreddit LiveStreamFails (LSF), which she apparently holds partly responsible for the surge in interest about her.

The streamer also explained that she was not embarrassed by the incident. It was no big deal and would only spread her name further (via Twitter).
How Amouranth’s career continued after the scandal
How did this affect her success? In fact, the incident seemed to really kickstart Amouranth’s career: After her return to Twitch in September 2019, she gained over 300,000 new followers – in the months prior, it had mostly been between 30,000 and 60,000 new followers.
However, Amouranth’s average viewer numbers did not significantly improve at that time, and in October 2019, suddenly 278,000 followers disappeared. The reasons for the rise and fall remain unclear to this day.
At that time, she couldn’t yet turn the sudden popularity into long-term growth, but the incident made Amouranth basically a kind of celebrity in the streaming space overnight. Apparently, she learned to present herself properly and to utilize the viral spread of content.
When the “Hot Tub” meta became popular on Twitch in the spring of 2021, Amouranth was right there at the top and has since been one of the most successful women on the streaming platform. In November 2022, Amouranth was finally the only woman in the top 100 most-watched streamers on Twitch.
When she was banned in September 2019, Amouranth had about 1 million followers on Twitch. Since then, her popularity has skyrocketed. However, she now does not want to rely solely on bath-water streams and wants to show more versatility in her content.
What role does the LivestreamFail subreddit play? Many streamers have a kind of love-hate relationship with the subreddit. While some fear the dubious fame from a viral clip, other streamers seem to aim to land in the subreddit intentionally.
Streamers like the Canadian Félix “xQc” Lengyel react in the stream to clips of themselves that are posted in LSF. Excerpts from the streams then find their way back into the subreddit, continuously providing streamers with new content.

Their repertoire also includes support skills like healing, which can be placed on the ground with an AoE sphere, or abilities to reduce cooldowns for group members.
Many abilities of the Blast Archer can also be charged. By holding down the respective button and then releasing it, the attack will deal more damage. This applies to both normal attacks and skills.
The ultimate ability of the Blast Archer creates a gravitational sphere that pulls in enemies, making it easier to group them for area attacks.

The heavy attacks of the Heavy Smashers are slower, but they can throw individual enemies to the ground or stun them.

What can the Spell Caster do? The Spell Caster is the traditional mage class that almost no MMORPG can do without. The Caster prefers to spend his time in the background, at a greater distance from the enemy, to be able to cast his spells in peace.

What can the Twin Striker do? The third melee class of Blue Protocol is a strong DD. The Twin Strikers use two axes in battle to expertly chop their enemies into small pieces.
Their class mechanic revolves around combos. Normal attacks steadily fill the combo bar, which can increase the striker’s attack power by up to 130%. At the same time, the collected points can also be spent to use certain abilities.
To survive at the front line, the Twin Striker can buff his defense or drain the HP from his opponents. The basic combat flow of the Twin Striker involves dodging enemy attacks and using the resulting opportunities to deal massive damage. It is a “go in and out” combat flow.
Leveling up the tactical striker skills affects how often or how long they can be used. Axe attacks get additional strikes, and jumps can be performed multiple times in quick succession.

At 16, the American Kyle “Bugha” Giersdorf was already set: he participated in the Fortnite World Championship in the summer of 2019 and managed to win the grand prize: a whopping 3 million US dollars. But how has the career of this shooting star progressed since then?
How did Bugha win the 3 million US dollars?
The Fortnite World Championship took place on a single day, July 28, 2019, in New York: 100 players managed to qualify for the Solo World Championship through online tournaments over weeks: Twitch star Ninja consistently failed to qualify at that time and became somewhat more desperate week by week.
The winner of the championship was determined in 6 rounds where all 100 candidates competed against each other. Bugha was able to win the 1st game immediately and secured 9 kills – he did not win in the other 5 games, but collected a lot of points by staying alive for a long time and making it to the endgame.
In the end, Bugha secured 59 points. He was far ahead of the second player, Psalm, who only scored 33 points. Bugha won 3 million US dollars that one day – almost half of which probably went to taxes, but it was still an enormous sum for the 16-year-old.

Did he continue to win money afterwards? Bugha was still successful in Fortnite in his further career after 2019 and achieved good placements. However, he never came close to matching his huge win from 2019 again, as Fortnite has not been about such high sums as in the World Championship for a long time. Epic Games itself cited “Covid” as the reason that no World Championship was held live on-site anymore.
In fact, the World Championship also proved to be a structural problem for Fortnite, everything revolved around that one day in July for a year. While the hype was relatively high before and during the World Championship, interest in Fortnite dropped significantly after the championship was played.
This was apparently a problem for Epic Games because Epic Games presumably wants Fortnite to be especially relevant at Christmas, when wallets are loose and kids mass-buy new skins. A peak of interest in Fortnite in July and a drop in interest afterwards was not really in the interest of Epic Games. However, the World Championship caused just that decline in interest.
In hindsight, there were large doubts about whether everything at the World Championship was “clean”
This could be the real reason why there was never another World Championship like it: There were also considerable doubts about the competitive integrity of the event afterwards: Many who made a big profit at the World Championship trained with a 19-year-old coach, Hugh Gilmour, also known as Destinyjesus. His “pupils” won 17 million out of 30 million $ at the World Championship.
There were serious suspicions that the coaching mainly consisted of the coach’s players making agreements about where to land on the map and how their paths from there should look. The goal could have been for the coach’s players to stay out of each other’s way for as long as possible during the Fortnite World Championship and thus increase their chances of winning.
In Fortnite, the player with the highest chance of winning is the one who survives long and does not waste his resources in fights with equally strong top players. Thus, at the World Championship, players who played defensively and did not engage in every fight won, while hot-blooded gunslingers secured many kills but also dropped out of a round early.
While it was never clearly established how much manipulation was at play, there is surely a reason why Epic Games limited it to a single World Championship: The “Battle Royale” format is simply too susceptible to manipulations and collusion.
Streamer Myth was not as good in Fortnite as Bugha for a long time – but built an impressive career as a streamer on Fortnite.

How did it go for Bugha outside of E-Sports? Like many E-Sports players in Fortnite, Bugha is active on Twitch, where he had almost no viewers before the World Championship. However, right after the success of the World Championship, his numbers increased:

Unlike other well-known Fortnite players like Benjyfishy, Ninja, or Tfue, who have all turned away from Fortnite over the years, Bugha has never done that and still shows Fortnite almost exclusively on his Twitch channel.
However, Bugha also notices that Fortnite is currently losing some steam. At Christmas 2022, his Fortnite team Sentinels parted ways with E-Sports in Fortnite, and the now 19-year-old has to find a new team.

How did the bans come about? The team Luna Gaming had already qualified for the playoffs in the current Dota season. A success, but the team was a bit down because they would have fewer games in the near future.

Even the PvE demon Cortyn suddenly plays PvP in WoW: Dragonflight. The reason? The entry is simpler than ever.
If you are like me, you haven’t thought much of PvP in World of Warcraft until now. I’ll be honest, since the days of “Vanilla”, when we engaged in zergs in the same Alterac Valley for 6 hours, I rarely warmed up to PvP. Sometimes I have to “torture” myself into it when I see a nice reward, like an exclusive mount that is only available for a short time. However, it is clearly my collector’s instinct in the foreground, not the fun of PvP.
With Dragonflight, World of Warcraft has done a lot right and I suddenly found enjoyment in content that I previously found tedious. Therefore, I even gave PvP a chance – and it is as pleasant and easy as it hasn’t been in years.
PvP gear is essential, but easy to obtain
Anyone wanting to start PvP in Dragonflight should urgently acquire a PvP set. This is not a “recommendation” but an absolute necessity if you want even the slightest chance. The reason is that all PvP gear in battlegrounds and arenas scales to a higher item level. Even the green gear crafted from professions, which only has an item level of 340 in PvE, suddenly has an item level of 398 in PvP.
The “War Mode” PvP set is also worth it for initial steps in the arena and battleground.
Another factor is that PvP gear almost always has “Versatility” and the trinkets even have a set bonus that grants even more stamina and stats.
So don’t expect to have even the slightest chance in PvP with your PvE gear – generally, other players, even with good PvE gear, will have around 100,000 hit points more when they use PvP gear.
What PvP equipment is available?
In principle, there are 5 different armor sets to play PvP in Dragonflight. The differences are quite small, but represent a simple and easily understandable progression.

Nonetheless, it was a strange feeling to play such a large MMORPG like FFXIV on a handheld. Almost as if it shouldn’t be possible. Once I got somewhat used to the controls, there were no more problems. FFXIV runs smoothly and easily on the Steam Deck.
At startup, you are greeted by the usual login screen. No big surprises here. On the top left, the Steam Deck runs a system analysis.
The FPS fluctuate according to internal Steam Deck analysis between 60 and 30, dropping below 30 in areas like Limsa. The GPU utilization is about 50% – 70%. In dungeons and raids, there are no noticeable performance drops that would affect gameplay.
The battery situation looks a little gloomier. After long fiddling with the graphics settings, I managed to squeeze up to 4 hours of life out of the Steam Deck. Controller players will feel at home, I have suffered
The first thing that awaits you when you want to play FFXIV on the Steam Deck are the settings. Even before logging in, you should upload your character setups to SE’s server so that you don’t spend more time setting up your user interface than necessary.
Settings like UI, macros, gear sets, etc., are saved locally on your PCs and consoles in FFXIV. However, there is an option to upload them to SE’s server. To save myself some extra work, I backed up the data and downloaded it on the Steam Deck.
You can easily upload your character settings by right-clicking in the character selection and then download and adjust them on another device.
However, that did not mean that I could start gaming right away. There were two reasons for that.
On the one hand, I had to adjust the resolution and position of the individual UI elements. The screen of the Steam Deck has an unusual resolution of 1280×800, making it much smaller than my 2560×1440 PC screen.
I had to resize and move various UI elements first before I could see anything properly. Those of you playing on 4K TVs or larger screens should particularly prepare for this.
On the other hand, I had to spend a lot of time adjusting the controller controls and setting up the famous cross command menu of FFXIV. Since I had only played the MMORPG with mouse and keyboard until now, the controller was basically uncharted territory for me.
The automatic button layout of the controller is totally bananas. Keyboard players can thus expect to spend a lot of time adjusting and distributing skills.
It also took a good while until I distributed the skills for all my combat jobs, crafters, and gatherers. Just to redistribute them again because I realized that my layout was absolutely terrible.
Actually, I was practically born with a controller in my hand. I got my first console when I was 6 years old and have since played almost exclusively on consoles. However, the controller controls of FFXIV are still a challenge for me, not because they are bad. On the contrary, among MMORPGs, they are considered one of the best. But because they are very unconventional and require a lot of muscle memory.
If you are PC players who have only played with mouse and keyboard until now, it’s best to pick a controller guide beforehand. There are many very useful key combinations and shortcuts not explained by the game. You can also search for layout suggestions for your job skills and adjust them as you wish. From experience, I can tell you that total finger salad results from the first attempt.
Chatting is by the way not exactly a 5-star experience on the Steam Deck’s onscreen keyboard.
Controller players should quickly feel comfortable with the Steam Deck controls. The only adjustment will be the controller type. The Steam Deck uses the Xbox layout, while many FFXIV controller players will probably be playing on Sony consoles and will have to get used to it a bit.
Perfect for Relaxing on the Couch
While I also play a lot of other games on the Steam Deck, flexibility was the main reason I wanted to play FFXIV on it. The advantage of handhelds is that you can take them virtually anywhere.
While this flexibility is limited for an always-online MMORPG, it still has its uses. If I want to just lounge in bed and do a few dailies, I can do that now. The Steam Deck is perfect for more relaxed FFXIV content like:
Leveling
Farming
Crafting
Treasure maps
Island paradise etc.
You can also easily run random content and the 24-player raids, provided you are accustomed to the controller controls. It took me a while and several rounds at the training dummy before I ventured into the content (and even afterwards, I still played total nonsense).
However, I will initially avoid the harder content like Ex-Trials or Savage. On the one hand, I don’t have the necessary muscle memory with the controller controls to deliver the same performance as on PC. On the other hand, the smaller screen of the Steam Deck can be quite a disadvantage in fights with many mechanics.
No matter how much I love my PC, when you work at the same spot every day in a home office where you also game in the evening, it eventually becomes too much. It is also not always possible to switch to the couch, since the TV and consoles have to be shared with a partner (or with children in families).
The Steam Deck is therefore a versatile alternative for me, offering FFXIV alongside other options. I wouldn’t buy the device just for the MMORPG, but it’s a significant advantage that I can play my main MMO on it.
Before some of you whip out your credit cards to order a Steam Deck and play FFXIV on it, you should urgently check your account first. The account system of the MMORPG can become a problem.
The thing is: FFXIV accounts are managed centrally through the Mogry Station. This ensures, among other things, that you can use one account for multiple platforms.
So you can link your Square Enix account with your PlayStation account. If you acquire FFXIV for PC and PS5, you can play on both devices with the same character since there is unrestricted crossplay in the MMORPG. In that case, no additional monthly fees need to be paid.
Controller players should have no issues with the controls.
The problem now is that this is not possible with Steam and PC, as strange as it may sound. The MMORPG has separate Steam and PC accounts that are not compatible with each other. Anyone who has FFXIV on Steam cannot link this account with the proprietary PC version of FFXIV.

Whenever I look at the upcoming releases for 2023, I bite my lip impatiently. There are just a few titles that I urgently want to play. And it’s not because the past months have been bad in any way.
But the survival sector was somewhat neglected. V Rising came as a surprising summer hit on Steam, Dying Light 2 also entertained for a few hours. Otherwise, there isn’t really a noteworthy title in the genre to be found in 2022.
But 2023 is bringing a lot. Throughout the entire year, so many titles are coming that I want to check out that I don’t know how to fit them all in.

1. Return to Moria
Normally I don’t reveal the absolute highlight in my lists right away, but for my most anticipated survival game of 2023, I’ll make an exception.
A group of dwarves builds their base underground in the mountains of Middle-earth, forges masterful armor, and has to defend themselves against the dark dangers from below. I can hardly think of anything that would make the game better for me.
That I can also play in co-op and at least invite my colleague Maik Schneider to join … uh, play along, tops it all off. But I’d better let the images speak for the game; here’s the trailer:

2. Nightingale
Nightingale is almost on par with Return to Moria for me. It captured me, much like the Lord of the Rings game, from the first images. The indie game features a unique “Gaslight Fantasy” setting in Victorian style. I have a huge weakness for that.
The story is rather straightforward: the Earth is threatened to be destroyed by a cosmic storm or something like that, and with the help of portals and magic, we are to explore worlds to find a new home.
Along the way, we encounter all sorts of mystical creatures like fairies and fight for our survival. What makes Nightingale special for me, besides the setting, is that historical figures like the famous scientist Marie Curie are also supposed to play a role!
Nightingale completely forgoes PvP, so all worlds can be explored alone or with friends at one’s own pace – even largely peacefully, as mentioned in the interview.
Nightingale was supposed to start early access in 2022, but now it’s not coming until sometime in 2023. Visually, the game already looks impressive and somewhat resembles New World:

3. Sons of the Forest
I’ve read and seen more about The Forest than I’ve actually played. The first part is known for its episodic, story-driven gameplay with different endings. However, after seeing all the endings in videos and reading the story on the wiki, multiple playthroughs didn’t seem that interesting to me anymore.
Nevertheless, The Forest is counted among the best survival games ever, also regarding ratings. With over 95% positive reviews on Steam and hundreds of thousands of players, it’s definitely a popular game.
And indeed, I find this grotesque scenario of an island full of mutants and cannibals, dangerous places, and secrets appealing. It has a post-apocalyptic vibe without the typically “dirty” raider flair that Fallout or S.T.A.L.K.E.R. bring.
Accordingly, I’m looking forward to seeing the story of The Forest continued in Sons of the Forest. Because apparently little Timmy has grown up and is returning to this mysterious island…

4. Among the Trolls
My personal list wouldn’t be complete without at least one strange indie game you probably haven’t heard of. Strictly speaking, Among the Trolls is no longer an indie game, because the publisher 505 Games (Death Stranding, Rocket League, Terraria) is now behind it, but the title originated as an independent project.
There isn’t much information about the game yet, except that it will combine survival features such as survival, crafting, and base building with RPG elements such as character stats. Magic also plays a role.

5. Dune: Awakening
I would like to conclude the list with a potential blockbuster. Behind Dune: Awakening is the massive Dune franchise and the experienced studio Funcom, which has already had considerable success with Conan Exiles.
Dune: Awakening has everything a survival game needs: an open world to explore, harsh survival due to water scarcity in the world, a good combat system, and of course crafting. There’s also a good portion of story, featuring characters known from the Dune books and movies.
However, the survival game takes it a step further and introduces MMO(RPG) elements such as guilds, skills, and an economy system revolving around the famous spice. Colleague Maik Schneider sums it all up pretty well:
Personally, I’m a bigger fan of Conan the Barbarian or Riddick, but Dune delivers exactly the dirty dystopia that I’m a big fan of. For that reason, and because Maik will surely “persuade” me to check out Dune: Awakening, I’ll be looking at it.
In fact, it’s still not quite known when Dune: Awakening will be released. It is expected to come out sometime in 2023 for PC. And it already has a good chance of landing in my top list of the best post-apocalyptic games. The trailer already looks really good:

Of course, I know that 2023 also has some AAA productions and major sequels lined up. However, in my list, I wanted to point out some of the highlights that are found a bit off the beaten path. Still, I’ll briefly mention the big productions that will surely keep me busy next year:

Because 2023 also brings another really big blockbuster: Diablo 4. Yes, I know, it’s not a survival game. Still, it will surely keep me occupied long enough that I won’t be able to extensively play all the new releases in the genre. Even if you probably won’t like what I have to say about the new action RPG:
