In the MMORPG EVE Online, the largest battle ever since the release recently took place. Not only were two records broken, but a significant amount of money was also destroyed.

10,253 players fought for the battle of Aioth – more than ever in any video game. With this, EVE Online set two world records:
- Largest PvP multiplayer battle in video games (previously 8,825 players)
- Highest number of players competing against each other in PvP simultaneously (previously 6,557)
Up to the point when the servers of EVE Online went offline, a significant amount of money was destroyed, as the developers now confirm.
An expensive fun
What did the battle cost? The battle for Aioth cost almost 10 trillion ISK according to the developers on eveonline.com. The developers have converted that into about $74,550, or approximately €63,500.
While this battle is not the greatest financial loss in the history of the MMORPG, it still saw a yearly salary destroyed in just 10 hours. The developers also visually represent what was destroyed in a graphic:
What do the developers say about the servers? Many players from the losing side blamed their defeat on the crashed servers. The developers also commented on this. According to their statement, they specifically strengthened the server for the battle and isolated it from the rest of the game world.
They did a lot to enable the thousands of spaceships, drones, and attacks, but even CCP Games’ reinforced server simply could not handle the over 10,000 fighters. The developers also noticed new bugs during the battle that they have since fixed.
Furthermore, they urge players and faction leaders in the game to announce larger battles using a tool so that additional resources can be made available by the developers.
