The lead developers of Overwatch reveal some secrets of the game – not all revelations are entirely serious.
Through the Youtube channel of Ars Technica, a clip has now been published in which Jeff Kaplan and Geoff Goodman (the two “Jephs” of Overwatch) talk about some details and design ideas of the game. Many things were already known, but there are a few amusing revelations.
The mystery of the mysterious number 54
Blizzard fans who have a love for detail have been wondering for a long time what the ominous number 54 means, which keeps appearing in the different universes of Blizzard. It is found, for example, on Bastion (“E54”), but also on weapons in World of Warcraft. The number can also be found on the bunker of the Terrans in StarCraft II or on various interface elements of the game.
The story behind it is relatively simple: E54 was the gamer tag of Jeff Kaplan’s stepdaughter in Minecraft. One day, when he built a large glass building, his daughter wanted to show him something and came running – unaware that she was being followed by a Creeper. The last thing Jeff Kaplan saw of his glass tower was the small name E54 before everything was blown up.
In the meantime, she has taken on a different name online. Allegedly, because the “Bastion Mains” annoy her.
Doomfist becomes a mage-sniper – yeah, sure!
One should not take Kaplan’s words regarding the (possibly) next hero Doomfist too seriously. Here, he seems to be joking and “reveals” that Doomfist is a pure ranged fighter, practically a sniper who also relies on magic.
Doomfist could appear in the game very soon – because the next patch bears his name!
