One of the first anime films aimed not just at Japan but at a worldwide audience is Ghost in the Shell. A remake is now returning to the year 1995 when the anime was released, but with a more colorful palette.
What kind of anime will this be? Ghost in the Shell is actually an anime that was released in 1995. Back then, it was the first film that did not first run in theaters in Japan and then was delayed abroad, but was simultaneously released in Japan and other countries worldwide.
The premise: In the year 2029, we find ourselves in a highly technological future. Many people own a cyber-brain that is directly linked to the global data network. Whole body prosthetics are also part of everyday life.
At the center is the young woman Motoko Kusanagi. After a severe accident, she possesses a complete artificial cyborg body, and the question remains: If everything is artificial, what makes one human?
Together with her task force, she works as a secret special unit for the Japanese government, fighting cyber criminals and terrorism. They are on the hunt for the Puppet Master, a mysterious master hacker who hacks into foreign cyber brains, overwrites human memories, and then uses them for his crimes.
A Ghost in the Shell in a Fun Way
How does it differ from the original? Unlike the film, the series is based on the manga. Instead of a dark and philosophically heavy cyberpunk film, we can expect a colorful, poppy anime with a chaotic vibe. The comedy aspect is also expected to increase noticeably.
Motoko is no longer a melancholic philosopher questioning her own existence. Instead, she comes across as cheeky, humorous, and extremely self-confident in the remake.
Since the film was only 82 minutes long, many subplots from the manga were cut. Some characters remained in the background, and the finale was heavily compressed.
In the series, the remake has time to detail different chapters of the manga. The trailer also shows that some characters are a bit more revealing, just as they are in the original manga.
Where and when can I watch it? The series premieres on July 7, 2026, on Amazon Prime. You will need a paid subscription to watch the anime there. It is still unclear how many episodes there will be and whether all will be released at the same time.
