In a community stream, the developers from Warhorse discussed their current projects, and of course, this also included the recently announced role-playing game for The Lord of the Rings.
What have the developers revealed? Let’s first take a look at the new information about the recently announced role-playing game for The Lord of the Rings.
- Viktor Bocan, the Design Director of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, is leading the development of the Middle-earth RPG.
- We can expect an open-world adventure, focusing on the immersive world and the story – just like the two Kingdom Come titles.
- The developers promise “interesting characters, unforgettable places, and of course, a strong narrative focus.”
- For the Warhorse team, the Middle-earth RPG is a “passion project” and they want to dive into everything the universe has to offer.
The developers cannot yet specify a release window. However, the ambitions are high, as the following quote from PR chief Tobias Stolz-Zwilling during the latest community stream on YouTube suggests (via techradar.com).
With KCD1 and KCD2, we have a very unique way of how we develop RPGs and how we understand RPGs. I once said in an interview at Gamescom that we want to become the new kings of RPGs. I still stand by that. I know it sounds a bit arrogant, but I really stand by it. I think we have our own formula that you love out there. That’s also one of the reasons why the news [about the announcement of the Middle-earth RPG] made such waves – because people trust that we know what we are doing.
If you haven’t played Kingdom Come 2 yet but enjoy RPGs with immersive worlds, you should definitely check it out!
The next Kingdom Come is closer than you think
What about Kingdom Come 3? The Warhorse team is currently working not only on the Middle-earth RPG but also on a new role-playing game for the Kingdom Come universe. Here, Creative Director Prokop Jirsa is once again in charge, and the developers are currently expecting a release in the next fiscal year (sometime in 2027 or early 2028).
This could indicate that the next Kingdom Come will not make another huge leap in scope. For example, the second part cost me over 100 hours of gameplay. The first Kingdom Come has a bit over 50 hours on the clock. I would be fine with a third Kingdom Come fitting in between sometime.
