A new large quest item has sparked a debate around the inventories of Path of Exile 2. Players are now discussing why it still exists in its current form in 2025.
What is the quest item about? In Path of Exile 2, players have received a new quest item in Act 4. The Shark Fin can be obtained after a boss fight in the new act of the game. Although it can be directly handed over to Kaimana on the island of Ngakanu, many players are unaware of this when they receive the item.
However, since the quest item takes up 2 · 2 slots and thus robs players of space in their inventory, many have wondered why this is even necessary. A debate started on Reddit about the inventory of Path of Exile 2 and why it functions the way it does.

Criticism of the Inventory
What bothers players about the inventory? The inventory of Path of Exile 2 is intentionally designed to be restrictive. Each player has access to only 40 slots, and only the warrior can expand their inventory by an additional 20 slots.
Large items such as two-handed weapons already take up 8 of the 40 slots. Additionally, further loot and currency items occupy many of the remaining slots. Players must carefully consider which items to take with them and which to leave behind.
For players, this is a frustrating task. Thus, there are item filters that speed up the process and hide many of the unnecessary items. Those who play without such a filter are overwhelmed by a flood of items. Anyone playing Path of Exile 2 has to sort and purge, which is precisely what frustrates players.
What should change? Players are discussing on Reddit what features they would like to see in the game. An inventory sorting function could sort everything uniformly and space-savingly. Endlessmattnc thinks similarly on Reddit, stating: “[…] It is a scandal that there still is no sorting function for the inventory or stash.”
Also, the fact that items cannot be rotated should be changed, according to Dixnot on Reddit. The extraction shooter Escape from Tarkov uses a similar system to Path of Exile and shows that rotating items is a good solution for better inventory management.
However, most players simply want a larger inventory so that they can carry more items. This could potentially be resolved with a backpack, according to players (via Reddit). Such an item was once available in the predecessor Path of Exile (1) but was removed after the Affliction League in spring 2024.
While some do not believe that anything will ever change about the inventory of Path of Exile 2, the recent example of asynchronous trading shows that the developers are also willing to make significant changes.
