In Hollywood, there are some actors who have many methods for preparing for a role. For Christian Bale, it is important to get as physically close to the role as possible. That is why he is also known for his incredible body transformations, which can also take a toll on him.
Christian Bale is not only one of the great actors in Hollywood because of his role as Batman.
- He has been nominated 4 times for an Oscar for his acting performance, and won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for the film The Fighter.
- He portrayed Batman 3 times in Christopher Nolan’s trilogy, which is also of great significance for actor Gary Oldman.
- He is known for his physical transformations.
Bale has not shied away in the past from gaining or losing weight drastically for his roles. He needs this strong physical change to immerse himself in the characters. He transformed his body for his role in Vice.
His probably first extreme transformation took place for the film The Machinist. For the film, he trimmed his body down to 120 pounds (about 54 kg). At the end of filming, however, the next role awaited the actor in the form of Batman in Batman Begins. He had 6 months to build muscle for the film and reached 220 pounds (about 100 kg).
After that, his films continued. Sometimes he lost weight again for his role in Rescue Dawn, only to gain it back for The Dark Knight or The Prestige. For his role as Vice President Dick Cheney, he gained 40 kg again and is hardly recognizable in the film.
In an interview with The Guardian, he explains that he transforms his body in preparation for his roles. It is helpful when you don’t look like yourself.
He explains how he cannot simply slip into a role, he needs a distance from himself, which he achieves when he looks in the mirror and thinks: Ah, that doesn’t look like me.
But these transformations also have physical and mental consequences. Although he has been lucky so far and has not suffered any lasting damage, he knows he cannot keep this up. He explains in The Times: I can’t do that anymore. I really can’t. My mortality is staring me in the face.
The time spent within the roles is also mentally taxing for him. During his promotional tour for the film Mowgli, he talked about how he cannot do this anymore.
It is pathetic. It is terrible. When you lose weight, you gain nothing but going to bed hungry and feeling miserable […] [Gaining weight] is the complete opposite. You lose absolutely all discipline and eat like crazy. I have to stop, this is not healthy for your body.

This was in 2018. For the 4th installment of the Thor series from Marvel, he has lost a lot of weight again to transform into the villain Gorr. So far, the actor has been lucky and has not suffered any lasting damage, but such transformations could lead to health problems in the future.
The actor would only return as Batman under one condition:
Christian Bale wants to be Batman again, but only if the right director makes the film.
