In our guide to a Creeper farm in Minecraft for version 1.17, we show you how to quickly farm a lot of gunpowder. Creepers will be farmed automatically while you stand and wait at an AFK spot.
What kind of farm is this? The materials for the Creeper farm are easy to obtain. You build the farm and an AFK spot, and then you can simply keep your Minecraft active while the farm automatically kills Creepers and collects the gunpowder in chests for you.
We tested the Creeper farm in version 1.17 of Minecraft and the Java version on PC.

Tutorial – How to build the Creeper farm in version 1.17
The beginning: Find a flat area that is far from caves. Ideally at a height of more than 60. You can often copy the farm on top of each other to increase your yield of gunpowder and Creepers. But keep in mind that your AFK spot should be about 120 blocks above the farm. So you will need space above as well.
First, build five of your building blocks, then move three blocks inwards, build two blocks side by side there, and then move three blocks in the opposite direction, so you are back on the original line where you placed five blocks side by side. Then build 13 blocks inwards. This is your outer wall. Mirror the whole thing to create a closed shape. It should look like this:
Now raise a second layer of the blocks you just placed.
Now go to the middle of the 13-block wall and place a carpet on the ground there. That will be where your cat sits. Do the same on the other side. Your cats need to love you so that they remain sitting on command. You can use food to ensure they obey you.
Then, place the other carpets in the middle of the base, spaced with two blocks between each. As you can see in the following graphic. Keep in mind, the blocks with the cats are an exception and only have a one-block gap.
Now dig a 3x2x4 size hole in the middle of the farm between the walls that are two blocks thick. Three blocks side by side, two blocks wide, and 4 blocks deep. This is where your Creepers will fall.
The upper edges of this hole should be fitted with trapdoors that you can open downwards.
It’s best to keep the trapdoors in hand because you will now use them to build a roof. For this, use the upper edge of your two-block high outer wall and clad the inside of your farm with the trapdoors.
This ensures that only Creepers spawn inside (the carpets help against spiders).
You can cover the middle above the hole with trapdoors if you plan to build only one layer of this farm. If you want to build multiple layers, you can leave the hole open – as shown in the picture above.
Now jump into the hole in the middle and place both water sources on the bottom blocks on one side. The water flow will drive the Creepers to their doom. Make sure to choose a direction so that you can still build a storage area there.

From the water source, dig eight blocks with the flow. This path is two blocks high. At the eighth block, dig one block deeper so that the water source continues flowing, and then go about eight blocks further.
Place your campfires under the last two blocks of water and below them the two hoppers that are connected to the double chest.
Now you can line the room with glass or other stones. Glass is practical so you can see the Creepers and your trap in action. However, you will usually only see Creepers in the trap when you jump out of your AFK house and run into the trap.
Now dig your way up from this room. This will be your way to loot the harvested gunpowder from the chests below in the future.
Now go up and cover the “roof” of your trap with the stone stairs. Place them on the outer wall and on the trapdoors. If you want to build multiple layers, skip the stairs at this point and instead place blocks like cobblestone that will form the floor of the next layer. The roof of stone stairs is intended for the last, highest layer.
Now the farm is finished. You just need to stack your 120 scaffolding on top of each other and build a safe room with blocks at the top where you can stand AFK. Start building the scaffolding directly at the wall of the farm.
While you are in the room, Creepers will spawn in your trap, run into the hole in fear of the cats, and be washed onto the campfires where they burn.
The loot from gunpowder then falls into the hoppers and is directed into the chest because they are connected to the chest. You only need to go down to loot in your room.
How effective is it? In our test, the Creeper farm produced 170 to 200 gunpowder in 15 minutes. For this, we used a setup of 5 layers stacked on top of each other. So this simple construction is definitely worth it for farming. If you want, you can double it somewhere else.
Keep in mind that you need to stay in your AFK house for the Creepers to spawn in the farm.
If you now want to see something sweet like rabbits after all those Creepers? Then be wary of thunderstorms. This clip of this Minecraft player was seen by 40,000 people because a thunderstorm killed his rabbits.
