Tonight, on Sunday, November 6th, the finals of the LoL Worlds 2022 will take place in San Francisco in League of Legends: 26-year-old Kim “Deft” Hyuk-kyu can become world champion with DRX. However, an old school friend stands in his way. Unfortunately, he is now the best player of all time: Faker.
These are the two players:
- Deft (26) is a bot laner who has been bouncing around 6 different teams for years: He never quite reached the big success. In 2020 and 2021, he participated in the Worlds with DRX and Hanwha Life, but was eliminated early each time. This year, it took two minor miracles for him and his team of underdogs to reach the finals.
- His peer Faker, on the other hand, has been playing for the same team for 9 years, for “T1”, has become a three-time world champion, and has turned into a living legend. His team was regarded as one of the favorites to win the Worlds 2022. However, hardly anyone expected how strong the team really was . Faker suddenly plays as strongly as during his heyday, a young bot lane seems to inspire him.
Update from November 6th: Deft and DRX have won the World Championship. After 5 close rounds, a hard fight at the Elder Drake, and a failed backdoor attempt by Faker himself, T1 lost in the finals 2:3.
Why is this match so special? Faker and Deft attended the same high school in South Korea 9 years ago. Both went to Mapo High School and were rivals even then. This is evident from a video interview on Inven from 2019.
Deft said back then: “I was the best player in my class. But in another class, there was a player named Faker, who was ranked 1st. I was ranked around 100.”
Faker, on the other hand, says: He didn’t even know who Deft was back then. Of course, he believed he was the best player at the school.
The interview revealed:
- Deft knew very well who Faker was and that he was competing with him; after all, Faker became world champion at 17. He was “already very famous.”
- From Faker’s responses, it is evident that he hardly remembers Deft and does not really know who he actually is.
“The most anime-like plot of all time – I love it”
How is this seen now? Since it is known that Deft and Faker will meet in the finals of the Worlds, fans on reddit are quite delighted by the idea that Deft has to face his old school rival, who was always so far superior to him back then.
They say:
- “Like in an anime”
- “High school reunion. Worlds 2022 finals”
- “This is the plot closest to an anime and I love it!”
- “Deft and Faker went to the same school and now they meet in the finals of the Worlds. Just that makes the finals so much more exciting, especially when you have been following for a long time and saw these players first compete in 2013.”
The finals of the Worlds will take place on the night from Saturday to Sunday, November 6th, at 1 AM.
For Faker, this storyline could become a problem: In 2017, he looked like the sure favorite to win the Worlds with T1. But then it became the Worlds of “Ambition”: A mid laner who stood in Faker’s shadow for years, then found his love, married her, and defeated Faker with the “Wife” buff behind him.
Let’s see if the “undying demon king” can resist the power of a really good story this time:
LoL: 5 years after the bitter defeat, Faker goes for the 4th Worlds title – Will it work this time?
DRX equalizes to 1:1 after 2 matches
Update, November 6th, 3:38 AM: After the first 2 matches, it stands 1:1 for the underdogs. DRX managed to win game 2. The finals are proving to be closer and more exciting than most experts thought:
- If T1 and Faker win the game, it will have been hard fought
- If DRX really wins, it is a sensation
DRX defeats T1 3:2 in the finals of the LoL Worlds 2022
November 6th, 6:26 AM: DRX has actually done it. The underdogs have won 3:2. Faker and T1 leave empty-handed despite a great struggle.
