LoL Classic sounds like a kind of nostalgia trip for everyone who has been playing League of Legends for ages. However, this is not the case, says MeinMMO editor Benedict Grothaus. New players particularly benefit from one change.
The Classic mode uses an older version of LoL with a different balance, a different map layout, and sometimes even entirely different abilities. A lot is different, but not everything was worse back then, some players even find.
However, one significant change particularly concerns new players, as an essential part of the game is instantly accessible in LoL Classic: Summoner Spells. These are abilities that you can select two of before the game starts.
Among these spells are important skills such as Flash, which quickly gets you out of danger zones, or Smite, which you definitely need if you want to take on the role of the jungler.
Spells like Ignite or Flash are locked behind level barriers in modern LoL. You need to play several rounds first to be allowed to use them. League Classic allows you to play different roles with appropriate spells more quickly. Important are:
- Flash for all roles
- Exhaust for supports
- Smite for junglers
- Ignite, Barrier, or Heal for mid or bot lane

Beginners learn roles more easily, but face different hurdles
Although Summoner Spells are an important tool, LoL Classic hides two other features behind a level barrier that the modern version resolves in a more beginner-friendly way: Runes and Masteries.
Runes can be used in League of Legends right away, though initially only in “pre-made” form. Adjustments become available later. In LoL Classic, you need to level up first to unlock Runes and then buy them (involves grind) so that you can customize them for your champions.
Masteries, on the other hand, have completely disappeared in modern LoL. LoL Classic at least gives you access to various pre-made mastery pages at the start, but you can only adjust them later. However, both systems are not as relevant for gameplay as the Summoner Spells.

LoL Classic also offers you not only all Summoner Spells but also a significantly larger selection than the modern version of the game. Many spells have been removed over the years because they were used very little.
