Thor is one of the most powerful heroes of Marvel. While he assembles the team against Doctor Doom in the next movie of the MCU, he has lost his powers in the comic universe. This clears the way for a new ruler over Asgard.
Marvel fans can look forward to the next big ensemble movie in 2026: Avengers: Doomsday. The trailer already shows that Thor assembles a team of heroes to stand up against the dangerous adversary.
In the comic universe, things look different for the hero: In “The Mortal Thor,” nothing remains of the mighty god. He lives under another name and without his powers in New York.
This also means that he no longer rules over his home Asgard. A new volume of the comic series tells how the power struggle unfolds there during Thor’s absence.
A new All-Mother ascends the throne
What happens in Asgard? In volume 13 of “The Mortal Thor,” Thor’s son, Magni, has to mourn for his friend, the cyborg rabbit Blackjack O’Hare. He died from an arrow from Athena’s bow – shot by the sorceress Amora.
Magni falls into deep mourning. Although he is now the ruler of Asgard, he is locked in the throne room of the All-Father, where countless centuries pass by, as time flows differently. Thus, he dies while only about a day has passed outside the door.
Amora then opens the throne room and finds Magni’s decayed skeleton. Nothing stands in her way to seize power and thus rule over Asgard. Her approach shows that the realm need not be conquered through violence, destruction, or the use of magic. Sometimes a trick and exploiting weakness, as in Magni’s case, is all that is needed.
Amora is thus the new All-Mother and has great influence as such. She can form alliances and partnerships with Thor’s enemies and become a great threat. The character hails from Asgard and possesses strong magical powers. Particularly in the field of manipulation, she is a true master – many also fall under her charm.
It remains to be seen whether and how Thor will react to this power shift on Earth. After all, he has lost his status as a god and primarily fights for humanity.
Here, Marvel takes a different route than the film universe of the MCU and offers exciting new developments separately. That Asgard, the home of Thor, Magni, and Odin, now falls into the hands of such a dangerous sorceress is narratively enticing.
