I have to reach level 21 in an MMORPG this weekend instead of enjoying the weather at 31 degrees

Welcome to the MeinMMO format “What we are playing this weekend”. We will tell you what we are playing during the free days and why you should keep this game on your radar right now. In this edition, you will find out why MeinMMO author Cedric Holmeier has to grind Honor of Kings: World this weekend, a game he already knows well.

This is what occupies me this weekend: I actually know Honor of Kings: World quite well. I have already played the title in China for about 40 hours for you and am only a stone’s throw away from the endgame.

Thanks to community patches, it works well in English now, so I have a grasp of some deeper mechanics. However, the alpha of the MMORPG is also running in the West this weekend, and despite the nice weather, only until May 27.

During that time, all western players with access also have the opportunity to try out the new MMORPG without any detours. For me, there is not much new, but the developers are forcing me to take a look again.

Who is writing here? Cedric Holmeier is an Asia MMORPG expert at MeinMMO. He has invested thousands of hours in games like Tarisland, Throne and Liberty, Jade Dynasty, Metin 2, and others. Most recently, he also tested the new MMORPG Honor of Kings: World for MeinMMO, which convinced him.

One and not an MMORPG

What kind of MMORPG is this? Honor of Kings: World is not a real MMORPG. I have to give that to my colleague Karsten Scholz. The title is one of the new offshoots of the MMORPG Lite genre. If you want, you can play through the entire game virtually alone and do not need to interact with other people.

At the same time, you can still do that and experience the typical MMORPG moments. However, I still had fun during my test:

  • The combat system, which consists of the choice of abilities of two MOBA characters, played fantastically even with a ping of over 300.
  • The hustle and bustle in the city works well despite shadowy characters and gave me a really nostalgic experience.
  • The open game world was well populated, offering puzzles, bosses, and secrets! Also, with the fly skateboard and fast travel, you could quickly get from A to B.
  • The game doesn’t have a real pay-to-win; it rather aligns with the monetization system of MOBAs from the 2010s.
  • The housing system is filled with love for detail, and fans of The Sims will have a good time.
  • The graphics look unusually sharp and good, which surprised me, as the title is also supposed to run on mobile.

Even though Honor of Kings: World is not a “real” MMORPG, I had a lot of fun with it. What I clearly missed was a challenge. For me, the grind became somewhat too easy; the enemies were either unkillably strong or barely scratched my HP.

But I am virtually forced to play! The developers have devised an evil plan. Only those who reach level 21 in the test will be invited to the next one. The first alpha test, which is happening this weekend, will personally show me hardly anything new.

According to the experts, there are exactly the same contents for me as in China, except that now most of it will likely be translated into English. At the same time, the test only runs for 6 days, from May 21 to May 27. So I will hardly make it to the endgame to finally see for myself if it becomes challenging.

At the same time, I naturally want to participate in future, longer tests and not waste my chance through inactivity. You will see me in-game as the one who diligently presses the ESC key to skip dialogues to see if I can still make it to the endgame.

The obligation to play Honor of Kings: World is, of course, said with a wink. I am also curious how well the translation has become now and how the title will fare in the West without any identification with the characters only known in China.
